Tracking Style Bird Dogs? Where to find them.

Post by PaladinPup » Tue Nov 21, 2023 9:28 pm

Hi all,

I am an avid grouse dog guy. I hunt with my DD every chance I can get. However, I am looking for a new dog that is a purpose breed grouse dog.

I have heard Kyle Warren of Paint River talk about his "Tracking Dogs vs his True Dogs". Tracking dogs are more like some of the European type birds dogs that when they track old or fresh bird scent they go one point, wait for the hunter, then methodically continue tracking that scent until they find the source, and then "set" by crouching down not to scare the bird away. I am sold on this type of hunting.

Beside from Kyle Warren of PRS, where else can I find a bird of any breed that hunts like this in North America? Are there Pointer breeders out there that are not breeding all for the "High head, Hightail?" I am not knocking it, but I want to go a different route and Kyle may not have a pup available for some time.

I would live a pointer or another short coated bird dog that hunt like this kind of stalking, cat like track. Can any of you point me in the right direction? I am talking on the phone, but I wanted to hear from other experienced handlers here.

Thanks,

Pic of me and my DD doing what we love most.

Can someone please help this new member?

Sounds like you're in the exact same boat as I am.

I have a draht, nearing 13. She has been an outstanding overall, well rounded dog. But I live in the middle of the best grouse hunting anywhere, and have settled on a setter from Kyle as the next dog. The draht got me hooked on the tracking style, but I'm looking for more of a grouse specialist next time around. A little less drive and a little more caution. The only other person I've heard of with a similar style dog is Ann Jandernoa from Northwind Setters. You could also look into small munsterlanders.

Thank you, I agree, we’re in the same boat. Best of luck!

I would contact Anne Jandernoa of Northwind Grouse Maps. She has a lot of video of her setters doing outstanding work tracking grouse. Some DD's are VERY good grouse dog's, but most are not. Try Anne.

Small munsterlanders are natural trackers. Mine runs head down the majority of the time looking for ground scent.
