Aye Mates,
Me cousin Ken just flew out to Iowa and picked up this 8 week old female Picardy Spaniel pup. The dog will be strictly a companion animal as Ken does not hunt and has no intentions to hunt the dog.
Ken named his new lass CAOIMHE (pronounced KEEVA in Irish) and meaning the "nobel" one. Ken is of course excited about his new pup which will live with him on his mini farm which includes a large horse paddock and some nice fields to run in.

Maybe everyone else knew this , but I had to google the "Picardy Spaniel" . I had never heard of that breed, nor knew of its temperament etc...

That's a picture they should frame and put a picture of the dog as an adult right next to it in future years.

I've been interested in and following Picardys for several years. Very interesting breed. Suppose to be a very easy dog to train. While I know they make great companion dogs they are really bred to hunt. Hope not too many of these rare pups go to non-hunting homes.

An interesting perspective. Most of what I have researched paint the Picardy as a particularly difficult dog to train. Slow to mature, not the most accepting of training pressure, and can be easily "bleep" down were comments I both read and had mentioned to me by a well respected trainer and NAVHDA judge.
They may very well make a nice companion dog and I am hopeful for my cousin Ken's sake that is the case.
I agree with you in that I much prefer to see working / hunting breeds go to hunting homes / placements.
Cheers,
Mike

I have found easy and difficult ones in every breed I have worked with so far. (No Picardys yet.)
In some cases, I believe there can be larger differences in the abilities and characteristics between bloodlines or what was produced from specific breedings verses different bird dog breeds.

You make a very valid point, however with around 1000 Picardy's world wide, the bloodlines are far from diverse.
