Male GSP question

I have a 2 yr male GSP that when playing fetch in the yard, doing little training exercises, or gets around unfamiliar dogs will start to chomping his jaws. Never really thought anything of it. Thought it might have just been a weird kinda cooping he was doing when nervous or anxious. But the past few times when we have been out with our female she has gotten very defensive when he does this around her. Is there more to this? Is this normal?

I'm glad you mentioned that because I have a male GSP as well and he does the same thing while he is playing and happy.
Actually its kinda loud where that u think it would hurt.

Would like to add our female was fixed before we got her and a rescue that was our first dog and 4 yrs old. The GSP came 2 years later has spent his whole life with her and is also fixed .

(Would like to add both dogs are fixed. The female is 4yrs and was fixed when we rescued her when she was 8 months. The male GSP we got when the breeder allowed us to pick him up and we got him fixed at a year old. He has spent his whole life with her.)

Perhaps he does this to gather scent ? Speculation ?

Some dogs chatter out of excitement or anticipation, like when they know they're going on a run or you're about to put down the food bowl. Chattering is really common when they sniff females' urine...maybe that's also excitement and anticipation :D

The female probably snapped at him because that's her way of saying "Keep it in your pants, Dude".

That was my first thought. My male GSP does that on pheasants especially when he is winding them from a distance.

We all have to admit that these creatures have their own little way of doing things. After commenting here on this thread this morning. I took the little guy out and he was doing what I call the vacuum cleaner routine. Nose to the ground cheeks puffing out while the whole time a suction sound could be heard. Made me chuckle & smile . First time I ever saw this dog do this routine.

I think DonF is spot on - loose dentures. Have you considered implants for your GSP?

Mine does the same thing and he hasn't been around any female pooches. Seems to be and excitement/anticipation thing with mine.
