Hunting Clothing Water Proofing

Post by Carolina Gundogs » Tue Feb 04, 2020 11:10 am

Has anyone found an effective water proofer to use on their hunting clothes to make them water proof? After getting soaked in low 40 degree weather this past weekend, I am interested in finding a good product to water proof my hunting clothes with.

Thanks!

I have found nothing that lasts over the long haul. I use light rain gear made with a soft brushed exterior. This has worked well weather elk hunting or chukar hunting.

DWR solution works quite well. DWR is a coating found on a lot of modern outdoor gear. It can wear off over time so when you notice the garments not performing as well as it previously had it’s time to reapply. Several companies make it. I have used Nikwax’s products and had really good success. https://www.amazon.com/Nikwax-Hardshell ... eature_div

Just be warned that set will only allow you to wash / coat 2 garments. I did not know this the first time I bought it and had I Known I would’ve bought larger bottles. Outdoor stores like REI usually carry it too.

Change over to gore tex clothing or under layers... you'll be comfortable even if your soaked in 40 deg. weather. I haven't found anything applied that lasts, except tin cloth that Filson uses, but that is heavy material to wear.

Use a gore tex outer shell and layers of fleece under. And understand you can't stay totally dry if you are moving. That's why its always better to sit in a duck blind when its raining
