Stop It !

Post by polmaise » Fri Jan 17, 2020 2:55 pm

Stop It ,Stop It ,Stop It !!
I have just about had enough of it to be honest
It is a Dog ! ..Pure and simple as that is !
It is not a ' black lab male' and it is not a Yellow female , it isn't even 'A black cocker' or even a Fox Red retriever , or even a Border terrier that is different to every other terrier ...that you have an issue with the dog at your feet . It is a Dog .....and the colour or breed means Not one jot to that particular dog . Yadda, yadda ,,tell you breed specific this and that ,and specialist this and that ..get out of here ...or cash in on what you want to hear .such and such is an expert with pointers etc ..yea well good for them ...so does that make them amateurs with non pointers ?
It is a dog !! Unfriend or leave my place ..I will be fine honest ..I won't take offence in real life .
The best outcome for me ,will be I don't have to see or be reminded by others who think Dogs are not dogs and categorise them in specific sections to make them specially specific for the purpose of sales or marketing for their own needs as experts .
If that's the case , why don't you just give your dog to the winner of the last trainer that threw a stick for fido in the water at the local park yesterday ?
It's a dog ! ..Perhaps it is the owners that are So different ?
I had a client today ,we met for the first time with his little dog . The owner (I always like to ask the history of what the owner does or has done in life) before asking about the dog . He informed me that he had 14 degrees in academic education subjects in his illustrate career as a lecturer in science. ...Wow! Impressive I replied .
It took me nearly 1 hour to teach this fine gent to blow a stop whistle at the same time as raising their hand while the little dog was sitting in front of them .
I am sure He will get it right 100% of the time in about 50 years from now . The dog I have higher expectations for.

I agree, a dog, is a dog, is a dog. Some dogs are more equal than others however !

Polmaise-

I think you may have just uncovered the root of the problems that I have with dogs. It does not take me an hour to coordinate a whistle and hand signal, but then I only have three degrees... and never lectured.

My wife and some friends and family might well disagree with that last statement, so let me re-phrase....

I never lectured...for pay.

All I will say is that my hat is off to those who train the trainers.

By comparison...the dogs are easy. But even some of them are too smart for me. :D :P :D

Interesting Robert. I was invited to speak at a Southern Arizona Quail Forever meeting on dog training recently. What an honor!
The president provided a complimentary intro then said, "If you put 10 dog trainers in a room, there is little they will agree upon".
Hmm....? Might be true!
So, rather than offer specific "how to" training I expounded on my philosophy regarding when/how to start pups, the windows of learning missed by trainers that wait/let dogs run amok as youngsters until they are ~1+ year old, etc.
The very first question was, " So....how do you train the trainer?"

Ugo -

I may have mentioned this a while ago, but it bears repeating in regards to training the trainer.

A very good, very patient pointing dog trainer, who was a successful amateur field trialer, kind of took me under his wing for a good while. He showed me a whole lot of things during that time.

One lesson stands out. We were going out to work my young dog and Bill(the amateur trainer) was carrying a roll of duct tape.

As we were walking, he, as usual, said almost nothing, just watching the dog, nodding when I made a proper move and looking at me and frowning when I was doing something Incorrect. My curiosity finally got the better of me and I asked him what the duct tape was for. He turned to me and said(as best as I can recollect):

One piece is to cover you mouth when your dog is working a bird to keep you from distracting the dog. "You need to shut up and let the dog work.

Since you also refuse to put your hands in your pockets and insist on flailing them about when working the dog, the second piece is for your hands, to keep them firmly in place behind your back when not actively handling the dog." You need to be still unless you have to give your dog a signal.

That was probably forty years ago. I'm still working on it. :D

Unless someone can direct me to any thread or post on a forum that has been made by a Dog who has ,or has had an issue with anything in Training ,I can't find it .
I can relate to your post/memoir Ray G. I was about 8-9 years old before I could comprehend the basic english language and even to this day at 60 years old I am often struggling with some words or grammar, and I am part of a race of human beings blessed (or not) with the power of speech over hundreds of years !..yet some folk are perplexed when a 6 month old dog doesn't understand what they are saying or telling them ?? They (the dog) however are absolute masters of body language !!
So forum /internet/social media etc , is actually communicating with people rather than the actual dog , those critters are still doing what they do .
So, in a way those mediums are training the trainer (or not) ? ..
The application of the intel received is often different to what is conveyed to the 3rd party (the dog) .

The "Stop it" part in the OP was really one of those annoyingly ,recently Internetty language/semi marketing/comfortingly suitable phrases used for human elitism (for the perceived trainer) or misgiving (for the owner) . The "Quote" ..I have an (x) Insert breed as you wish ' with an issue of (x) is no more different to a poodle or a Boxer . It is the issue rather than the breed (imo) ..Both parties, ie ..owner and trainer often specify the peculiarities and individuality of the breed based on their inadequacies in training a dog In my personal opinion and experience .

99.99% of the time in training for any activity for any breed ..or sex btw ,the dog isn't doing anything wrong ,it just isn't doing it right !
So,someone else in the exchange of data is .
Thanks all who have given response , and yes Sharon I do need a holiday ! ...I was thinking Canada or Wisconsin

Most of the dogs I work with are head cases brought on by someone that claims to be a trainer that has overdone the shock collar. So there are trainers and then there are actually trainers. The duct tape thing is the first thing Dave Walker told me and is a valuable bit of advice. As to the holiday, you might consider Idaho, you would be welcome here anytime. Best to everyone, Bill
