GSP Puppy Escape Artist!

I have a 6 month old GSP puppy and she has been staying in her pen while my wife and I are at work for the past few months, but yesterday she climbed out for the first time...I am now putting wire around the top of it so she can't climb out any more. What do y'all do to help keep them entertained while in they are in their pen? It's like she all of a sudden developed a little separation anxiety!

Thanks for all your input!

Do yourself a favor and get to the bottom of this ( ASAP) If you are not there to monitor ~ other more sinister things could be in play. I will send you a PM about my past experience with a pup trying to climb out of his (pen) kennel. The main reason I will never have another dog. & it sucks ! I am to old to sell my house and move :(

Not mine, just a video someone sent me a few years ago.
Sorry Photobucket compressed the heck out of it.

Her pen is a 10'x10' pen and it is 6' tall. I saw her climb out the other day and she knew she was caught! I put wire around the top of it so she cant get out anymore. She stayed in there all day today with no problems.

What are some of y'all putting in their pens or crates for them to play with during the day?

Had One GSP that would go to the corner and stick her legs both directions and climb over a 7 foot fence in about 5 seconds. She would shimmy up on the 2X6''s and look around before jumping down. She saw me watching one day and jumped back into the pen. The two I have now escaped and 2 hours of searching later a lady called and had them. The were 5 miles from the house. I keep tags with phone numbers on them. It's worked 3 times now. Pretty scary.

A kong with a treat inside, a knotted chew rope, nylon chew bones---something to keep them busy all help. You need to put a top on the kennel & if you don't have them on concrete or decking, something to keep them from digging out. I once had a pen with a tree in it for shade and I had a Springer that would climb the tree, walk a limb out past the edge of the pen and jump down outside the pen---I ended up putting an electric cattle wire on the tree to keep her out. That was the last pen I had without a top to it.

I had a setter afraid of lightning to the point of attempted jail breaks....only took one success to make an addition to the fence.
As it was not a kennel run, a top was not possible so I took 2' - 3' of fencing and 90 degreed it at the top of the chain link.
In climbing, the dog made the overhanging section bend in and he was stopped.
No guarantee but it worked in my case.

The "sinister" comment above has be a bit confused but....nothing unusual there.

My kennel runs have the same chain link on top as sides. Completely enclosed. Some dogs are better at being kenneled than others. As long as they can't get out, the majority conform. Although I've had one or two that never got over it, they were moved on. I prefer good citizens in the kennel.

I don't know but I think somewhere in the GSP lineage is some kangaroo. I have seen too many that look at a fence of any kind as just a challenge, including mine. A roof of some kind is definitely the answer for an outdoor kennel.

Spent the better part of a decade trying to solve that puzzle. There is no kennel that will hold a bored GSP. If she wasn't climbing over the top she was opening the latch or chewing the chain link. The conclusion we came to was just dropping the dog off at grandmas house on the way to work. Upside was they both had someone to keep them company. Downside was a fat dog. Worse problems to have imo. My dad used the kennel to store his mower lol.

Mine the above mentioned toys help. Mine spends hours chewing on deer antlers and buffalo horns.
