Paw infection

One week ago we hunted pretty good. It was cold and about 6-12 inches of snow. i noticed he had a little limp this week but i just assumed he might have hurt a paw while hunting. The limp got a little worse so i checked his paws. In between his toes he had a big red sore. Im thinking he must have cut his paw while hunting and it got infected. Can i treat this myself by cleaning it or is a vet needed. Thanks.

I wouldn't go to the vet but I don't go to the vet at all I do my own vet work. Soak it in Epsom salt for a couple of days and get back if it doesn't start looking better.

More likely a digital cyst. Read up on them in Google. Warm epsom salt foot soaks a couple times a day often helps, but sometimes you have to get the proper antibiotic from the vet.

I kind of thought it was a digital cyst. I was doing a bunch of research and that's what it look like. I was cleaning it with some peroxide and I'm going to start soaking it in Epson salt. If that doesn't work then I'll take him to the vet. Thanks for the help.

Is there anything I can give him over the counter?

My dog recently had a large swollen toe which looked like your dog's. My vet prescribed cephalexin and rimadyl and it went down in just a few days and he was back hunting by the end of the week.

last year at the end of the season I had the same problem with my griff.
within 36 hrs a golf ball appeared between the toes on top of the foot .
puncture wounds when infection sets in, develop on the top of the foot.
the tougher pad closes up and doesn't weep.

in my case lancing was needed to clean it out and antibiotics

My dog had something almost exactly like that this year. Ended up being a thorn in his foot. I went to the vet, got some Rymadil, and one pill reduced the swelling enough that I could see a black dot under the skin. Was able to pull it out and all better in a week w antibiotics.

Watch for a black spot surrounded by an abscess. Sure sign of a foreign body, most likely a thorn.

Quick update. Dogs paw is back to normal. I kept it extra clean. Daily soaks in epsom salt. Bacitracin and bandaged. Thanks for the advice! Good luck in the off season.
