stud dogs sperm count

Post by art hubbard » Sun Jan 31, 2016 11:43 am

I have a stud dog lined up to breed to my GSP female, should come in heat mid March. The owner took the dog in to her vet for a sperm count. He said the dogs count was at 30%. Gave her some medicine to give to him and come back in two weeks for another count. My question is- can this low sperm count be reversed ? Any words of wisdom will be appreciated...Thanks

Yep, that's why the vet gave her the medicine and told her to come back and get it checked. There are many reasons that could contribute so there is no guarantee it will work and that is why they want to check.

i HAD BEEN GIVING MY MALE SOME MED. FOR A FOOT INGERY & i TOOK HIM IN TO THE VET HE TESTED ONLY 10% SO I TRYED TAKING MY FEMALE TO ANOTHER MALE BUT THEY DID NOT GET ALONG SO WHEN I BROUGHT HER HOME MY MALE BREED HER ABOUT 2 WEEKS AFTER THE TEST & 2 MO. LATER SHE HAD 10 LLEWELLIN PUPPYS . SO IN A SMALL AMOUNT OF TIME THAT TEST CAN CHANGE .

Lots of things can affect the potency of the male. Overall health, quality of food, excursion, illness, temperature (as in summer vs winter), stress etc. The semen count is generally a reflection of the dogs overall condition 2-4 months prior to collection.

What did the Vet say about morphology, motility and morbidity. These are important factors as well. . Here is a chart with some good information

Ejaculate volume (without prostatic fraction) 1-6 ml
Sperm concentration 100-500 million/ml
Total sperm per ejaculate 300-2000 million
Progressive motility Greater than 70%
Morphology Greater than 80% normal
