dog coughing after swimming

My son in laws Labrador coughs after multiple swimming retrieves. Sometimes coughing all night and this last time a small amount of blood. At the beginning of the year our water was low and she was retrieving while mostly running through the water. Now that we have had rain the pond is deeper and she has to swim to revtrieve. This has happened last year and he took her to the vet and he thought she might be out of shape. So he worked hard to keep her in really good shape and now it only happened during swimming. he is putting water absorbing drops in her ears to help. Any ideas or any others with this problem.
