Anyone help tell me what I have here for pedigrees?

These are the pedigrees for the Vizsla pup I am thinking of getting. Looking for a good house/family dog that can hunt. Not running in any competitions or tests.

AKC hunt test titles after the dog's name in the pedigree--
MH--master hunter title, SH--senior hunter title, JH--junior hunter title

AKC titles before the dog's name in the pedigree--
NFC--National Field Champion, NAFC--National Ametuer Field Champion, AFC--Amaetuer Field Champion,
DC--Show & Field Champion, Ch--AKC show champion

There are quite a few field titles in the pedigree, which means there is a strong bird desire in the litter's past. Hope this helps. As far as house dogs--check out the parents to see if they are calm in the house. Good luck

As an owner of a few vizslas all I can say is do your homework. I did pass on a breeding this past winter because I had a little concern about the health of sire of the litter. The pups would most likely have made fine pets and gundogs but I didn't want to go in to something if I had even a little concern. It all worked out and I got a fine pup from a different litter. The concern I had was with the hip certification. Good luck.

Any tips or info on how a potential buyer can "do their homework" on a particular breeder? Don't want to hijack, but I repeatedly see this being said, but nobody ever elaborates. Are there resources available or does it boil down to simply trying to find owners that are willing to be honest? Particularly when it comes to health issues...how does a guy find that stuff out?

You can search for dogs hip ratings on offa.org. If it is a repeat breeding, check to see if any of the previous litters were ever rated. If the dogs ran in field trials you can look up the results on the field trial database. You can see some of the dogs a particular dog competed against. If possible try to visit the breeder to see their dogs. Ask the breeder about any health problems in past litters or in the history of the parents. Talk to people who have been around bird dogs for a while and get their opinion.

As far as hips--You can get on the OFA web site and type in a dog's name or AKC registration number and if they have had their dog's hips xrayed it will give you a rating(excellent, good, fair, mild dysplastic, moderate dysplastic, severe dysplastic). The dogs way back in the pedigree will only list the dog as OFA & a number. A lot of dogs don't have their hips xrayed but OFA will tell you the ones that have.
