Questions regarding a new kennel build

Post by Hotchkiss » Sat Jun 07, 2014 9:30 am

I am thinking about building a 2 or 3 dog kennel and have some questions. I am thinking of buying a three sided Kennel Pro Series from the k-9 kennel store. I don't have any questions regarding the dog box side of the kennel, but rather the foundation. It will be built on a site with a slope. I was thinking of putting in 24 to 30 inches of number 2 stone to build it up level and then using kennel store lifted panels for the floor OR just get synthetic timber decking and use it for a floor. In essence it would be built like a deck with 24 to 30 inches of stone under it. I could place the boxes on the uphill side or downhill side. There is a good grade above the kennel location so the area would be "flushed" every time we have a good rain.

Any thoughts on this approach?

Whatever you do, box's go on the uphill side. You don't want to drain into them.

I agree. If they went on the downhill side I was
Going to put a trough between kennel and boxes and elevated
Boxes some. I prefer boxes up hill but if most of urin
And poo is at end of the run there will be less gravel and
Lime for it to filter through.

From the polite lack of response I think everyone is saying go with concrete :)

I agree with the concrete suggestion. Well worth it.

Also, if you haven't bought the kennels yet, check out TK Kennels by Dave Terhaar. Great kennels ...built and designed by a gun dog/field trialer. I love mine. http://www.tkproductsllc.com/ Again, well worth it!

I used a place that sells concrete directly to homeowners for DIY projects for around $145/yd. They let you use their trailer-mounted "spindle" with a deposit. I poured a 10 X 22 pad for less than $350. The cheapest I was quoted was $800. Had to get the help of my lovely wife and my daughter's boyfriend, but it turned out pretty nice.
