How many dogs?

Post by FirearmFan » Thu Jan 09, 2014 9:28 am

The puppy addiction thread got me wondering how many people on here are single dog households or multiple dogs households. So how many dogs do you have? What's the most you have ever had at one time?

Right now I have 2. A Springer Spaniel and a French Bulldog. These are my first two dogs (aside from a lab and golden retriever we had when I was a kid). Sometimes I would love to have more dogs but with my wife and my busy schedules more dogs aren't really feasible. They are both inside dogs and I think all future dogs will be inside dogs as well and two dogs in the house can be plenty at times. So for me as of right now in my current situation, I think 2 at a time is my number. The only exception will be when these dogs are seniors I will probably get another puppy to start training.

So lets hear it. How many dogs do you have and what's the most you've ever had at one time? Puppies from a litter you plan to sell don't count unless you keep the puppy. I'm curious to see who has had the most.

I currently have six. I try to stay between three and six. The most I have ever had at one time is twenty-two, I think. My dogs are not indoors.

1 GSP named "Klaus"
&
1 Siberian Husky named "Mitch" - He's 12 years old now, & has retired to basically eating & sleeping all day indoors. Best dog I've ever owned

6 dogs, all Brittanys

Blaze (DC Britt Haven's Blaze of Glory) 9 yr old male
Tessa (GCH Hope's Dream Weaver) 8 yr old female
Chloe (Woodland's Money Pit) 6 yr old female
Forrest (CH Woodland's Forrest Fire) 2 yr old male
Moo (GCH Woodland's Water Fairy) 2 yr old female
NoJenny (Woodlands Spirit of Big Oaks) 2 yr old female

We just lost Courage in November at 13 1/2 yrs old.

We plan to breed Moo next year and will probably keep a male from that litter (still researching sires), and there are plans to breed Forrest to NoJenny, and we'd also keep one from that litter (probably a bitch), just not sure when that will happen.

We could have as many as 8 or 9 in the future.

Chloe, Forrest & NoJenny are at field training, but everyone is in the house when they're home.

It fluctuates !!
I don't sell pups! But I breed them...I keep them all from litters ,so it can get a bit hectic at times!
Most I've had on head count is 32.
Mainly Spaniels and Retrievers, but the odd HPR warms my heart.
We are down to 5 at the moment, but that's normal and planned. This time come July we will be around 20 of our own.
Dog's for residential training and boarding don't count!

five pointers and one setter with a pointer pup coming this spring. I hunt two to four times a week in rough country and need enough dog power to do so.

We have two at this time, three was the most we ever had. We lost our sonny last July, but we have his son, Choc a Chessie and Jenny a red setter, Jen just turned 1 in Dec and choc is 8. Hunting these two together, and I have the best of two worlds. Hard to believe but the chessie backs my red setter and holds until I let him go.

11 right now. But 4 are beagles - full time outside dogs.
2 Chessies (one 13 and one 2.5yrs) mostly outside as they seem to prefer it

All inside:
3 Pointers (one 14 , one 5 1/2 mos and one 5 yrs)
1 Vizsla (9)
1 GSP (2.5 yrs)

Seems like a lot, but we've really only got 2-3 on the ground at a time. And we do a ton of youth hunts (rabbits and quail/pheasant) so the dogs get used a lot.

With 5 inside, it's a bit busy, but the old pointer and the V seem to take it pretty easy these days. I have a GREAT dogsitter too - that helps. Hubby is only home on the weekends, so it's me on the weekdays - lots of poop scoopin' and feeding!

How many dogs?

Post by Frankug » Thu Jan 09, 2014 9:44 pm

I think fifteen, but I try not to count. Lets count:
1 coon hound
1 Bavarian Mountain Hound
1 English Cocker Spaniel
3 Beagles
6 Wirehaired Dachshunds
2 chihuahuas
So fourteen, I was off by one.
Five in the house right now, eight in the kennel. Coon hound runs free on farm.
All pups start out in the house, which there are two. The cocker and one Dachshund.
I dachshund in the house is retired and she has earned her spot by the fire.
The chihuahuas: I run them in a brace style for mice around the house, really quite sporty.

4 right now. The most I have had was 15 at one time. The most on the property at one time was 32 when I was actively boarding dogs. ( I won't count the time I had 4 litters of pups at the same time).

We current have 10

3 gsp
1 Dropper
2 labs
2 sarplaninacs
1 Australian Shepherd
1 mini Sachs

The most I ever had at once. was 25ish when I had coyote hounds and coon hounds. I'd say between farm/stock dogs and hunting dogs I'd like to stay under 10.

Jim.

Two right now
Jozie 5 y/o lab
Luci 3 y/o lab/GWP

Three would be my max, a new pup as a replacement for the eldest being retired.

I currently have two a lab that will be 10 in June and an english setter that just turned 5. I'm strongly considering breeding my setter when she come into heat again so that would leave me with three dogs being house dogs.

I have two right now, but the third will be added soon. I like one pup, one in their prime, and one old man to make sure no one steals the couch. Mine are 3 and 8, the 8 year old went on his last hunt this year so we will start looking for another pup around spring I would think

1 GSP (close to 2 years old)

Would like to sell the youngest Vizsla for another GSP. Daughter got wind of it and let me knew what she thought of that. Wife chimed in as well...Oh to dream....

Why retiring at 8? Seems like there should be some good years left yet, unless there are health issues?

Just one at a time for me, an almost 11month old English setter. When I was with my ex-girlfriend, she had 2 little ankle biters of her own and fostered up to three more at a time. So way too often there were up to six in the house. My old brittany at the time was the only one properly house trained. Before we broke up I made a bet with her that the pup I had put the deposit down on would be house trained before any of hers were. I'm pretty sure I won that one.

You hit the nail on the head. He was a heat of the moment purchase after I lost my last dog. He was bred by one of my good friends who has no business breeding dogs. He bred a 155 lb long legged male to a 60 lb short stubby female, the result is a dog that can hardly make it up the stairs at 8 years old, cant hear a thing, and cant see anything unless it is moving; although he is the healthiest pup out of the litter, most are dead already due to horrible joints. And in all honesty he hasn't really hunted since he was seven, this year he went out once and stoved up so bad I had to carry him back to the truck.

The answer to this question (how nany should you have?) is basede on priorities, where are you in your life and what are your feeling on living cmnditions for dogs.

I've had from 3-7 housedogs for many years, mostly Dalmatians (and a lab), but two Gordons for quite a while. Right now, however, one is not enough and three are too many, Thus two, German Wirehaired Pointers, ages 3 and 10. Full-time house and office dogs. We hunt and compete in various dog sports.
