pure breds

Post by cole.nelson782 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 7:17 pm

Ok. Watching the science of dogs it see that all breeds started as mutts so where in the heck did this papered dog stuff start??? What makes a papered dog a papered dog beside the parents being papered?? How is a new dog such as a labradoole become papered as its not a pure?

I'd bet that the "Continental Kennel Club" does................... What a joke of an organization.

To be a purebred the dogs must reproduce consistently pups that are like the parents. As a rule it takes seven generations with a lot of culling to get it done. Then for the breed to be recognized by AKC at least there has to be an active breed club and a standard of perfection. I think there is a requirement for a certain number of active breeders too.

CONTINENTAL Kennel Club. NOT the Canadian Kennel Club.

Yes the continental kennel club is a joke. I think you just need to have 2 purebred parents and the pups can be registered - so you could breed a chihuahua to a pointer and get papered puppies. However, just because you get "papers" doesn't mean they hold any weight.

In the US, there are two principal registries, the American Kennel Club and the Field Dog Stud Book(American Field)... and their affiliated organizations. There are some specialized(breed specific) type registries principally for continental breeds such as the DK, DD, etc. There is also a recently started registry for the National Shoot to Retrieve Assn.

If the pups do not have papers from one of those above, they are pretty much toilet paper because that is about all you can do with most any other "papers".

You left out UKC (United Kennel Club) that registers only Hunting Dog Breeds.

The AKC is just a registry. Breed clubs set the standards. Even with papers, it is a good thing to know the breeder, see the parents. A good breeder is proud of his dogs and can probably pull out paper work on the dogs ancestry that includes performance and health histories for a couple of generations.
Be aware that field bred and bench bred are becoming different breeds in some cases.
