its funny the fellas with dogs without tails always telling us we are looking at the wrong end of the dog


No disrespect meant just found it comical.....

A lot of food for thought here and the one main thing I have taken out of all this is that my dog is waiting too long to go on point once he gets a scent. what I mean is he follows the scent trail until he is very close to the bird. Unfortunately there are no wild birds to work him in in my area so pen birds are my only option. That is why I have been backing him up a bit.
I really need to work on this with him. Advice on how?

Planting, due to laws in NYs I have a very limited supply of birds. It's gotten so bad that I have actually been using the same three birds for the past 10 days, rotating them every other day.
Not sure if it is a good thing to do or not, but seems like my only option if I want to keep working him on birds. Our main focus right now has been to get him to hold till flush.

Been searching for launchers hoping to get a deal on remotes, looks like I may need to break down and order a couple of manuals since I have some spare money to use right now.

It sounds like the dog is trailing you and not the bird.

Is he getting real close before he points?
Is he catching birds?

If you do not have wild birds then make it as wild as possible by
Releasing the training bird ( just let them fly, don't let the dog see it)
Mark the released bird and put the dog on the ground and see how he does.

Ordered the book and two launchers, should be in by the end of the week.

In answer to your question, yes, he is usually very close, I would say within 5' or less. He goes on a solid point as long as the bird sits still, if the birds runs or flies he'll go after it and he has caught a few. That is why i am working with him on hold till flush now but it is slow going.

Some bad problems man.

Most will only worry about the "wrong end of the dog" when they are happy with the "right end of the dog".
