Ahh Man! I wish I would have read this article 20 years ago when I started with GSPs and Setters. I guess I have to find someone to take these sub-standard dogs so I can buy a Pudelpointer....

I haven't seen a single Pudelpointer so I cannot comment on them but the guys comment that cocker spaniels are the least hyperactive of the spaniel breeds really had me laughing. I've had springers and cockers and like most folk on this side of the pond I'd describe the cocker as being the most hyperactive.

I often wonder if the Outdoor mags deliberately try to boost their sales by publishing the very contentious views of certain authors. We've got an author of that sort here who publishes regular features in British mags. I think folk buy those mags mainly to read what rubbish he is spouting now !

I am sure that is one of the top factors in what is published. That is how you increase readership when you get a contraversity going.

And who would read a "you should buy a Lab" article anyway. :)

There are a number of very nice PP at our local NAVHDA, as much as I like my LM when I am in the market for another puppy if there is a good PP litter available I would not hesitate.

Though my LM is versatile and looks good at the same time.

But there are plenty of cool breeds out there, if it hunts I like it.

I can't argue with the Brittany being the best pointing breed ;)

Turns out cockers are "too small for ducks and geese". Gonna have to tell the dog that, he was retrieving ducks just earlier today. Pudelpointer it is!

For Sale:

2 substandard English Pointers (they retrieve well so they don't fit the mold - they both swim and retrieve early season ducks)
1 GSP (doesn't fit the mold - likes to duck hunt too much)
1 Vizsla (not even gonna go there)
2 Chessies (one points pheasants so she obviously doesn't fit the mold)

I'll trade all 6 of 'em for a puddle pointer....oops, I mean Pudelpointer. Seriously though - I had heard that Pudelpointers are nice dogs - would like to see one work at some point. So glad we all have different preferences - I hate hair so I'd never think of owning a Brittany - but I have hunted behind a few nice ones.

I can see the point. Most PPs end up in the right homes to get tested and its not many of them. Most are breed right . All the ones ive seen do really well. Will i trade one my guys ? No i said there are good that doesnt mean the ones ive seen are better than the GSPs that i own. I think its a larger range in performance in most breeds from top to bottom. I think its smaller range in PPs due to numbers and most who own them do what they are meant to do with them. Top shelf is top shelf no matter what breed.

I question what actual pool of experience this author draws from? This isn't the first time he's written an article based on personal opinion and limited facts.
For similar reasons I ended my subscription to "Gun Dog Magazine" several years ago. If I weren't a lifetime NRA member already, I may also consider cancellation of American Hunter. I have nothing against Pudelpointers as a breed, but the two that I've personally worked with were not exactly above and beyond all other dogs in general.

Spomer reduces a dog to the equivalent of the best choice in a boot.....read that way, says the most.
Just page filler to appease the hunter niche in the NRA...simply smile and turn to the next page.

Four setters for sale. Well bred, well developed quality dogs. . . will trade all four for one leftover Pudelpointer.
