I microchip my pups before they go to their new owners and Yes mine are chipped
Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
Chipped, absolutely. Plus a nameplate with phone #'s on the collar. One is not a replacement for the other.
Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
No, I've had dogs microchipped and never saw a vet run the scanner over them. Out of town emergency or switch locally, never saw them swiped. Once I asked just to see how it worked, they had to blow the dust off. Maybe the big city boys and girls see it getting used more often, but out here, it's a wasted expense.
Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
I have picked up two different dogs at different times, just wandering around lost.
Took both to the vet and had them scanned, both were chipped and both were returned the their owners.

I lost a dog 10 years ago and he still ain't home had a chip and I.D. tag on his collar and the chip tag on his collar. So I don't care much for chips but the up side to a chip is you can report the dog stolen with the chip company and if a vet scans it it will show stolen.

Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
My co-owned dog is chipped because he used to travel. The old man got chipped after snakebite treatment because it was advised to not give him rabies vaccinations and titer teat him instead to avoid possible adverse reaction. If I get a Championship on Two, then I will chip him prior to DNA. I chipped a a couple of puppies from this last litter, also. I'm slowly getting it done across the board. Most of them I don't want back.

Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
I have chipped all of mine in the past but I probably wont in the future as I have never personally known of any dog that has been recovered nor has ANY Vet that i have gone to checked any dog that I have taken in. With that said, I do have my own scanner in case I find a dog or one comes into one of the rescue groups that I volunteer for.

Absolutely why not it is not a guarantee and may not be probable but it is one more thing that increases the chances of getting the dog back. With the amount of money spent on dogs it is a drop in the bucket.

Agreed this is why I chip mine, its a small price to pay for increased chance of recovery even if the increase is small.onuhunter02 wrote:Absolutely why not it is not a guarantee and may not be probable but it is one more thing that increases the chances of getting the dog back. Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
I chip my dogs after hearing a story from my vet. He has a friend (also a vet) who volunteered his services after hurricane Katrina. There were hundreds of pets whose owners could not be identified. There were many more that had collars with contact information but the owners had been displaced. Most of the pets that were micro-chipped were able to be returned to the owners because of multiple phone numbers associated with the chip, and owners contacted the micro-chip companies with out of town contact information if they had to relocate. I know folks around here (GDF) would not leave town without their pets, but it seems like cheap insurance in some situations.

Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
I worked as a vet tech for about ten years. Every lost dog/cat that came in was scanned, every dog and cat that was treated by us for the local shelter was scanned. Since then I found a Pointer running wild in the desert, I took it to the closest vet on the way home and they gladly scanned it for free, some friends found a GSP in another state (Kansas) where the local vet scanned it for free as well..my experience has been if your unfortunate to loose your dog and fortunate enough to have an honest person find it then you could benefit from chipping.

Re: Spin off the collar thread- Microchipping
Every single dog with a chip found after the Joplin tornado was reunited with their family weeks sooner than those not chipped. Many, many dogs had no collars. I went home and within two weeks had chipped all of our dogs. Easy insurance. Not a single downside that I can think of. Have advised several good samaritans that have found dogs to take them in to have them scanned. 2 out of about 6 were chipped....they went home that same day. The first thing a shelter does is scan the dog for a chip. It.gives me peace of mind to have mine chipped.

Yes, my brittany is chipped. I have too much time invested in him to take the chance not to. I also have "reward" written on his dog tag...just in case.
