pigeon loft

Post by big_fish » Sun Apr 07, 2013 5:18 pm

I have a 10 x 10 building that I am planning on dividing in half to use as a loft I was going to make a flight pen attached to it install nest boxes in the back and roost on the side wall. I also would have a trap door and a viewing cage under it anything else I will need? How many birds would this 5 x 10 hold ? I ask this same question on a pigeon forum and mentioned dog traing and have got a constant flow of hate grams since so what's the difference between us placing a bird in a launcher or them shipping a bird in a box 500 miles away. They are both doing the same thing flying home.

from what i learned on GDF 2sq ft per bird 5 x 10 = 50 sq ft 25 birds should be your max as a rule of thumb

20 to 30 would work. Just remember the more you keep in it the oftener it needs cleaning. Unless you have a market for them 3 or 4 pair will probably raise more than you will want.

I would say 30-40 at the most if its 7'-8' tall just keep the water clean. I would say do less in the breeder side of the pen. My breeder pen is 5'-5' -7' tall with 5 mated pairs so with young its up to 15-20 sometimes till I pull out the youngsters. it seems about right.

The answer my friend is nothing. Sometimes we do shoot one for dog or pup. There is nothing different about shooting one or the hawk getting theirs while flying back. Good luck with your coop and remember not to mention dog training on the pigeon forums :D
