Well, I do not own one but did sleep at a Motel 6 last night  .

My buddy has two, a one ton and a 1/2 ton. He gets 21mph on the highway with the one ton. He said most of the time it is around average of 18.

I have a Cummins 5.9 Turbo that got about the same till I changed the rear end added weight and etc.

I drove 2 2002 3/4 ton duramax Chevy's for the company I worked at and both blew out injectors that took 4-6 months to replace. That was a bad year for the Duramax. My Cummins gets 20-22 mpg after I put the Diablo Sport chip in it. If a company would offer a Cummins engine with an Allison Tranny they would corner the market in my eyes.

My dads 03 DMax averaged about 15-16 daily driving and 20 on the interstate. Put 2 trans in it with mild performance tuner.totaled it and bought a ford.

Its an 03 7.3 and he likes it. Not as quiet as the DMax was and same trans issues as every other brand but his fuel mileage is about the same. Less concern with front end components. We have owned all 3 brands and they all have good and bad. The Cummins got a little better mileage than the fords or the GM but they were all within 1-2 mpg.

On a side note if I was going to buy a GM diesel I'd be looking for an 06-07 with an LBZ engine

For contrast to see if the diesel is worth the extra cost of purchase, fuel and extra maintenance I have a '02 Silverado gasser, empty 12 city, 14 highway, as low as 8 pulling a 10,000 lb trailer.

02 should get about 20-23 hwy, beware tho, 01-04.5 (LB7 motor) have some injector issues. I've got an 01, love it but beware of haze from the tailpipe at idle....injector/s and price should be adjusted accordingly.

I get 10-13 depending on wind pulling a 12,000 lb , 34 ft camper.....

Beware of chipping a Dmax with stock trans, at or over extra 100 hp you risk slipping the clutchs, especially if towing..... I personally wouldn't put any of those plug in contollers on a Dmax, I have 50 horse EFI Live tune in mine but my trans is built too.....pretty easy to bullet proof the Allison.

I can't think of any good reason injectors would take 4 to 6 months to replace....its an 8 hour job and its doable for a newbie with some experience working on vehicles. dealer will charge about 2 grand for one side , 4 grand for all 8. I've pulled my camper to the dakotas and back with a bad injector or 2 they will go a long time before they totally crap out. I've got a number 5 injector going now but its been going for 25,000 miles now. Really its not that big a deal as long as you plan for it....

I have an 07.5 duramax with the LMM (new emissions engine) and I installed a banks power pack for towing. Of all the mods, I saw the best results with just the exhaust, air intake and bigger intercooler. I have a tuner but mainly use it to monitor temps and keep it in economy mode. I have a stock tranny with a deep sump tranny pan and amsoil synthetic tranny fluid. No tranny problems to date but it tends to stall when shifting between 3rd and 4th when on the highest power setting and it slipped when I was towing a 16k trailer on power level 4 out of 6. As said above, beware chipping without any other mods. In case your wondering, I average 18-19 on the hwy and 13-15 around town and got 9 towing my trainer from Kansas to Washington at 75mph, I was pushing it to see what it would do. I got 10mpg towing my trailer to Kansas with a stock motor at 65mph or slower.

yea the 01 to 04.5's tend to get a little better mileage without all the emissions stuff.....

my trans mods are the cats meow towing, shifts right and quick. Might check your fuel filter , mine would stall like that with a super dirty filter...but it could also be the clutches or the NSBU switch......

EFI live with a decent set of custom tunes is definitely the way to go. As far as the trans goes a torque converter and a valve body with a bigger cooler will be all you need to keep the ol' juice box alive. I personally prefer to row my own gears.

My Cummins is an 04, has a Sunbelt or Sun something Shift kit, a Heavier torgue converter, I put in a posi track (that dropped my mileage) and it has a a Super Chip unit that for winter is in tow mode then most of the rest of the year unless towing the job trailer, I need to baby it to get 19 on highway now. But before I had gotten up as high as 23 one trip to VA.

I needed to have some kind of Posi< wish I had the money to do a detroit locker or one of the electronic ones. Since doing the shift kit and torque converter, It tows and shifts great. It does not enter the next shift like a butter it is a positive shift.

You guys hand calculating your fuel mileage or just reading it off the truck? Mine says i am getting 19 but if you hand calc it you are actually getting 17. My dads 01 got 21 mpg, so i would think that the 02 would be closer to that number. And since when does it take 4-6 months to get injectors put in a truck?

In 2002 I had 2 trucks blow injectors and strand me far from home. One took 6 months to fix and the other took 4. Two different dealers and they both had the same excuse. "So many were having the issue that they couldn't get parts any faster." They both seemed down on power after the fix so I'm thinking that they re-designed the injectors to avoid a major recall but neither dealer mentioned that.

You couldn't get aftermarket injectors under warranty for a Japanese engine in 2002. They were company trucks so it didn't bother me. Both trucks are still on the road today so I'm sure it's been fixed.

I see, nope the injectors still go bad, even the new ones....but i think they are better. They run better on bad injectors at first, more fuel most times. I had 4 done on drivers side 3 years ago, now one of those new ones started to go 15,000 miles ago, passenger sides never been done (stock), go figure.

Deke- mines hand calculated one quite a few trips towing and not towing.....the pre emissions D max's get a little better milage. I got 23 twice going to and from Tn (1600 miles) , calculating milage by topping up to within sight each time.

Yeah, I guess I should have said TC and VB with a cooler was the bare minimum. All our automatics get the works. We cant afford to be shut down on the side of the highway with horses or cattle in tow.

All my mileage is hand calculated.
