Bona's Kennel

Post by sitoneda » Sat Jan 26, 2013 9:26 am

I am searching for a GSP breeder. Can anyone verify Bona's Kennels in North Judson IN credentials?

It's hard to tell by the pictures but they don't look overly large and I couldn't find whites or weights but I shot them an email asking for references. I will forward anything returned. I will say that they have been in the breed for 37 years, I hope they know something.

I know it sounds crazy but the dog is huge and she told me when they went to get him they had many in that range, she tried to get me to breed my female with him. not sure how tall will try to find out.

60lb females and 70-75lb males is what the return email said. I'm sure they hunt but that's a big dog. Anyway, I asked for references and didn't get any. Take that for what it's worth and I can foreword the email if someone wants it.

All,
Thank you for the help. Is a larger GSP a bad thing? I do not plan on competing with this dog. I would just have him as a family pet, and hunting dog. I've never hunted with a dog before but would like to try. That being said, I really don't know all the ins and outs of owning or buying a GSP. My main concern is not getting totally ripped off in this process. I'm a little skeptical about forwarding someone a large sum of money, and a few days later wonder down to the airport to learn that there is no flipping dog.

Maybe they make a good duck dog! no problem breaking ice. Did you notice the head them also? I thought they looked different from the top of the skull to the nose?

I got a pup from Bona's Kennels May of 2012 Don x Rona. Drove a total of 16 hours to get him and I couldn't be happier. The breeder guaranteed the dog would hunt and he was right on! Pup has unbelievable prey drive and was pointing anything that moved within a few weeks of bringing him home. He was also house trained within no time. Probably the smartest dog I have ever encountered. Picks up on commands and hand signals easily. Everywhere I go people are always commenting on how beautiful he is too.
He LOVES water. The dog is BIG. At 10 months he is pushing 60 lbs but lean and athletic, about 26" to the withers.

The size of the dog won't matter as long as you are OK with it.

My question would be do they have strong point. Being imports a good number are bred to chase fur and point is secondary. We've been told many times to watch what you import because of this.

i have hunted with a female out of the kennel. The dog is amazing, retrieving, backing, pointing doing every thing you would want. she had her first point at 8 weeks and started to back at 6 months. the female is HUGE though. i have a big English setter at almost 65 lb and she is just as big as he is. But this isn't necessarily bad thing. i wouldnt let the size of the dog be the deciding factors. Good luck
