My GSP farts
Not sure if this should be under health and nutrition, but simply put my dog passes gas frequently that makes my eyes burn. Any advise on diet or recommended nose plugs would be helpful.
Re: My GSP farts
Is the dog eating a Diamond food?
If not what are you feeding and how much? Include any snacks, treats, table scraps, etc

Re: My GSP farts
this could get interesting. I usually go from regular snacks to sardines about 2 days before my in laws arrive. I would say food specific if the dog isn't having any problems, bloating, etc.

Re: My GSP farts
Something he ate good guess tell me this you don't fart because of something you ate ? remember the dog has a better sniffer then you do so maybe you should change foods.
Re: My GSP farts
Mine farts too... Usually his way of saying he needs to go outside and unload...
Re: My GSP farts
MY GSP FARTS........... hmmmm who's doesn't? when my little girl farts, it makes me
Re: My GSP farts
Usually it is nothing more than telling you are feeding a little too much. Rarely you may have to change feeds. But all dogs pass gas to some extent. Cut back the feed a little.

I needed the laugh tonight. Thank you! Just watch out for the dutch oven.
Re: My GSP farts
I haven't found a solution either. My pup can clear a room and it happens alot. I've tried changing foods it didn't help any. I think he does it on purpose.
Re: My GSP farts
Have this same problem with my Mother-in-law... especially around the holidays... we try to keep her away from the stuffing & eggs... Good luck...
Re: My GSP farts

Re: My GSP farts
Here's a word to the wise. My scare with my Vizsla bloating yesterday was due to him and my GSap consuming a healthy portion of a horse that's been dead for a couple of weeks. They could clear an NFL stadium right now.'

Re: My GSP farts
Thanks for the advise (I especially like the one about making worse when in-laws are to visit). I dont have a problem with the farting itself, just taken back at how bad it stinks. He is currently eating purina puppy chow a mug (1.5-2 cups) in the morning and one in the evening, he gets the mini milkbones for positive reinforcement during training times, and the occasional bone to chew on.
Re: My GSP farts
Get him on a good quality adult food.

After my dog farts he always leans over to smell his butt...
Re: My GSP farts
Mine does the same thing. It is almost as if he is surprised by it at first, then proud of it later.Red wrote:After my dog farts he always leans over to smell his butt...
Re: My GSP farts
Supplement the dog's food with a Large Tablespoon of a quality yogurt two or three times a week.
Nasty farts are frequently caused by an imbalance of good / bad bacteria in the gut.
Quality (no flavors, no sugar) yogurt will remedy this situation.
The best yogurts that I've found are either Nancy's brand or Mountain High brand.

Re: My GSP farts
It is quite possible that docE is correct. However, if that doesn't work, changing foods (slowly, of course) seems clearly indicated. For that matter, there are several good grain-free dog foods (NutriSource is one) that are certaiinly worth trying under the circumstances.
Re: My GSP farts
I swear! As I am reading/laughing at this post my boy walks over to me, sighs in disgust and farts right in my face. GSPs are jerks.

Re: My GSP farts
Puppy Chow is not a quality food in my eyes. Too much corn and one of the ingredients is garlic oil. No wonder the farts stink.
Re: My GSP farts
Somehow my dog has learned to smell my butt everytime I fart, and anyone else for that matter. Drives my wife crazy!!! Such a good dog, one of a kind.Red wrote:After my dog farts he always leans over to smell his butt...
Re: My GSP farts
You can give him one bean-o a day with a meal and that should help.
Re: My GSP farts
I really didn't want to go there but since you did, my dog could be in the next room and come running when he hears me fart just to smell my butt, same thing when my cell phones rings.Somehow my dog has learned to smell my butt everytime I fart

I'd be interested to know which brand of cell phone emits a farting smell when it rings. That could be a good gag gift.(literally).

Am I the only one who thinks this thread is going South fast?? I have always had a good sense of humor but I am not being amused at all. The OP had a legitimate question and was looking for advise but it has turned into something else. I know...I know, I don't have to read it but I just wanted to express my opinion and was just wondering if it is just me.

Re: My GSP farts
Sorry for my lame attempt at being humorous it wasn't meant to offend anyone. The answers to the OP were already given though so now I'll elaborate. A food that is rich in grains that are used as protein are not easily digestible by all dogs. A food that uses more meat to achieve the protein level will be better on some dogs. The problem with a higher carb diet is that the grains (corn, soy, rice, etc) is that a dogs digestive cycle is long (up to 18 hours or more) and in that time the carbs can ferment causing gas. Think about the fermenting process and how it would relate to farting. Do what EZZY suggested and get the puppy on a real food using less grains and see if it helps. Most of u's agree that if a dog is doing good on a food than there's no need to change it but excessively foul and frequent farts are just as good of an indication that the food isn't being digested well as is loose stools. Dogs can survive on These higher carb diets but SOME dogs can't thrive on them. The bottom line is that there is nothing to lose by trying a different food.
Re: My GSP farts
Sometimes we treat with bits of hotdog, the boy gets nasty after that.
Good thing folks have not learned his "brand" it's like when the kids were little, you can crack one off and pick up the nearest kid and exclaim, "someone needs a change".
Fart jokes, makes me feel 10 years old again

Re: My GSP farts
I think it is well documented that the gas has nothing to do with the grain and is usually associated with too much food. Grains are not included in a food to provide protein but corn does provide a little at least. Rice has practically none and soybeans aren;t included in any manufactured feed that I know of a there is no good way to crush them in feed mill. You will see soybean meal occasionally and I don't like to see very much if any.Brazosvalleyvizslas wrote:Sorry for my lame attempt at being humorous it wasn't meant to offend anyone. There just isn't anything that will produce gas faster than too much meat.

This is an undocumented study, but I always eat meat, I always over eat and I'm always gassy....so take that for what it's worth...ezzy333 wrote:I think it is well documented that the gas has nothing to do with the grain and is usually associated with too much food. Re: My GSP farts
I guess over feeding is the answer to everything including cancer and getting run over by a car. I guess if Fido hadn't over eaten he would have been able to get out of the way of that car. There are some facts that some peoplejust won't accept and one of them is that dogs are like people and some react to a certain diet differently. High carbs do not belong in a dogs diet and CAN cause things like loose stools and flatulence. Change this dogs food and see what the outcome is. I bet 10-1 it's not because of over feeding.
Re: My GSP farts
Kwikirish is right, one beano with each meal will solve the problem. We used it for one of our dogs who was relentlessly gassy on every diet, including grain free and hypo-allergenic. Didn't try raw diet though. Really, Beano will work.
Re: My GSP farts
When their babies their systems are constantly changinging. The puppy chow, the treats I would say that combined with a system changing almost daily. At that age I would look for loose stools. These little guy's can't tell us if they have a belly ache. That would be my concern. Max used to fart like that occasionaly as a pup. I am a stickler for details & now that he is full grown I have been feeding Purina and he only gets one type treat . Same time everyday and he rarely breaks wind. Though went to the bank the other day & he was given a couple treats (cookies) he wasn't used to and it did have an effect on him. I would watch the stools. Make sure he is drinking plenty of water. Grin & bare it !

Thanks for all the advise (and the rabbit trails). On the positive side it gives me the ability to blame the dog whether it is him or not.

Re: My GSP farts
Seriously, what does Bean O do to reduce gas? What is it counter acting?
Re: My GSP farts
I had the exact same issue with our last GSP addition to the Family and I fully understand what you are going through.I talked with our Vet and aslo our Trainer and between the 2 of them they found a solution. The problem in this case was the food.We found out the breeder never did use puppy chow and was feeding regular purina from the beginning and we had put her on puppy chow when we got her, and her digestive system would not adjust to it.Proved it forward and backwards over time of course and the solution was a different food. She is 20 months old now and doing great on EukanubaPerformance Sporting.I would just about bet the farm if we fed her some puppy chow we would all suffer again greatly.
Re: My GSP farts
What are we to conclude from the ineluctable fact that the overwhelming percentage of posters whose dogs are troubled by this seem to have shorthairs?
Re: My GSP farts
GSP's tend to be dogs that will overeat if given the chance much like a Lab will. That is not all bad but owners have to be vigilant.

Re: My GSP farts
Knock on wood but I've never had this problem nor anyone close to me. Ya a dog will fart once in a while so do we but nothing like this.Steve007 wrote:What are we to conclude from the ineluctable fact that the overwhelming percentage of posters whose dogs are troubled by this seem to have shorthairs?
And the percentage would seem higher because a majority of people own more gsps then other gun dog breeds. Its just how it is.

This thread is about a farting dog, and some of you are offended.
