What should a hunter always have in the truck?

Post by dreamrr » Sat Dec 29, 2012 4:27 pm

I am wanting to put together a nice box full of hunting nessesities. Safety equipment, tools, first aid, etc.
what kinds of things should a hunter never leave home without. I'm thinking stuff for the hunter and the dogs.

Search the forum for the "first aid" thread and check it out, it has tons of great info for stuff to keep with you for your dog from gauze to staple kit to super glue ect.. If you have equipment that runs off of batteries make sure to take an extra set, snake bite vaccine, blanket. There are a couple to get you started til someone else chimes in :D

leave a written note in your truck window inside showing your location that you are hunting.
i had heart attack and was lucky to get back to truck BUT i had directions where my treestand was in window in case i did not come out and i had rough time and day that i would be out of woods.
we dont have cell service.
i also put in note that i was on channel 10 on my 2 way radio and would check in every 30 minutes cycle to save batterys etc.

jumper cables in case of dead battery and someone comes along.
I NEVER KEEP A BATTERY IN MY TRUCK FOR MORE THAN 5 YEARS.i change them out early.
extra door key in my pocket and i hide my keys under rear tires outside. too many times with these new trucks that i have been locked out .

strong toe strap from tractor supply in case i get stuck.
aspirin is nice with water.
if snow/ice, set of tire chains and snow shovel in bed of truck.METAL snow shovel, not plastic one.

toilet paper and fusees to start a fire.

I have had one for 4 years. The remote areas of Nevada has little cell coverage.

I dunno, but if you've ever read some of the outdoor and field magazines list of things you should always carry in your pack while out hunting, you'll need your truck to haul it all! Keep it simple...

When I am hunting with my dogs I carry a craftsman tool caddy. The caddy has all the spares stuff and all the first aid stuff. It stays loaded up and when I take something out, it gets replaced. I also carry at least a gallon of water. I have another bag with MY spare stuff(clothes, gloves, hat, etc.) and necessities.

I have a kit with cheap tools(except for a power bar and a socket for the wheel lugs...that is top quality) a couple of cans of Fix a Flat, a tow strap, a 4 ton comealong and GOOD jumper cables. That stuff stays in the truck at all times. If I am really going out in the boonies, I will charge up my portable battery charger/light/tire inflator and take it also.

Just to be safe, I also check my tires and tire pressures...including the spare... check the oil, trans fluid, windshield washer fluids and see if there is anything hanging loose that should not be.

I HATE being broken down and I REALLY HATE being broken down with animals

Ray makes a good point on checking everything before you leave for your trip, especially for those who just have an older truck for hunting.

I always want to have a lighter or 2 in the truck. At least an .ß j change of clothes and a coat or 2. I also am sure to have an assortment of zip ties Super glue EMT gel and some medicinal Bourbon

As far as the truck itself I make sure there is at least a half tank of fuel and I have always believed that good tires were cheap insurance. UJoints in the glove box as well as an assortment of fuses. And of course chains

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

a good map. i like a good truckers atlas. if im going to public land i try to get a map of the property. i want to know the property boundaries. if im going out of state i try to do some research on the area im going to vet care ,medical care, good places to eat . Iowa's dnr website has a cool feature that has satellite pics with property lines and land composition of the public lands you can print out.

At least 5 gallons of water, a warm blanket or sleeping bag, an extra pair of socks (I hate cold feet worse than anything), and an adapter for the car charger that lets me plug in the re-chargeable stuff like e-collar and gps collar.

Among other things I keep a WWII folding trenching shovel. It is small, but super stout. It can pound through frost, dig out the tires, can split wood with the sharpened edge, and bury any evidence.

one thing i have with me when in the field with my dogs is a pair of wire cutters. Had a buddy almost lose a dog to a forgotten snare.

I have my amateur radio license and have a VHF/UHF radio in my truck and I also have a handheld radio. Nice for if you're stuck or broken down in a bad cell area.
