Todays Project: Just add pups.

Since I just recently insulated and air conditioned our inside kennels, I no longer needed our 2x4 walled, fully insulated, rediculously heavy "Den" style whelping box. It was great for the most part. The only big drawback was having to open the lid to see what was going on. I had pondered the plastic swimming pool idea, but decided I'd just build my own out of some material I had laying around. Below is the fruits of todays labor. I think I got 30 bucks in the whole shebang. :D

NOW I JUST NEED SOME PUPPIES!!!

That looks great, I would break dance in there. Nicely done.

Will you put a rubber no slip mat or just paper when the pups come along?
Nice job.

I have the same set up. Like to hear what people use on the floor. Need something the mother can clean easily that the pups can get around on. I use towels but they are hard to keep in place and I worry about young puppies getting tangled up. Otherwise it works great CJ

CJ & Ruff,

I went to the flooring shop and bought a remnant roll for 10 bucks. Its not the hard lineolium type thats slick on top. Its more of a plyable soft kind. It won't soak up birthing mess or anything else. Cleans up quick and easy, and the pups will be able to scoot around good. I'll probably throw in some old rags and stuff for her to nest in and while shes whelping. Once she's done I'll take em out and throw em away. Another thing I have found is the flooring like that holds holds heat well for them pups.

The best thing I like about this box I made is that with only a couple mins and a screw gun, the entire thing folds up and stores in the attic of my kennel building. :D

I've never used anything other than newspapers on the floor.I don't like rags ect.that get bunched up or the mother could possibly chew up & swallow.
Newspapers are easy to clean up & put down new ones.

Nor do I. I don't like anything on the floor once she's finished whelping. After that, the only thing thats in the box is mama and her pups.

Post whelp, newspaper or anything else for that matter is pointless. Mama keeps everything cleaned up.

Very nice :!: If you want to freight it to me, I've got a litter coming in August and I could have my female try it out for you to make sure it works okay
Again, very nice job. Good luck with the litter.

Before we did the work to the building, it was hotter than a firecracker in the summer and colder than a well-diggers arse in the Klondike, in the winter time. So, like I said before I had built insulated dens. Our last litter mama was having some complications and when she would go inside her box, you couldn't see what was going on. After that fiasco, I want full visibility to see whats going on without hovering or bothering too much.

I looked at a bunch of whelping box pics. I liked the low sides I seen on one. Then another had a cut down front, and I liked that idea too. I seen one where someone made the pigrail from PVC piping, and I loved that idea. I took what I liked from each one, added my own "Flair" and PFP color scheme and built this one.

So far mama seems to really like it. We should have puppies in roughly a week, give or take. Praying for a nice, healthy litter. :D

Nice work.....love the set-up. Is that floor vinyl, no-glue that real soft to the touch? I could use a box like that in about a week.

Yes, pretty sure. They guy that owned the flooring shop said I didn't have to glue it. However I know she'll nest like crazy before she whelps , so if it isn't glued down it'll be ripped to shreds! - I just took some kitchen and bath construction adhesive (caulking) I had laying around and covered the back of the flooring , smoothed the caulking out evenly and layed it down. It isn't going anywhere, now.

If I had any plans drawn up I'd send them to you. :D - My Grandfather and father were master carpenters. I am far from a master carpenter, but I did get his gift of being able to see something, or have a mental picture and just build it.

Well, Good thing my flooring remnant was only 10 bucks. After about a week of HEAVY nesting, birth mess, and more nesting just for good measure, "Sam" managed to eyesore her luxuary accomadations.

We were blessed with 7 healthy, vibrant, pups. 6 Females and 1 Male. We're pretty excited about them. I can't wait to see them up and running about. Bred to haul the mail.
