How tall for dog box?

Post by wems2371 » Tue Jan 03, 2012 9:39 pm

I'm going to look at a used Owens aluminum dog box with top storage tomorrow for a pretty decent price. Owner didn't have the measurements tonite nor the model, so I have no idea how tall it is. Seems like most of the Owens boxes with top storage run 18" tall, except for one that is only 15". While 18" is shorter than any of my dog's crates, we were thinking that would be okay, since dogs typically lay down in crates anyway. They'll just have to crouch to get in and won't be able to stand. Guy says he had coonhounds and could fit 2 in each hole, so it seems that other than being a little short, I should be able to fit one GSP in each hole fine. What do you think?

I think you should be good. Mine has to crouch down and slide in... Just sits or lays down inside. I think its safer anyway.

I think 18 is the same as mine. Either way, if he can fit two coonhounds in one box then one GSP should fit fine. I agree with Ultracarry...I'd rather them lay down than try to stand.

Yup agree, short is okay. It makes it uncomfortable to stand. Laying down, I believe is safer. I built mine at19" tall inside and they all lay down. Forces two of them to lay down.
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

Thanks for the input. We went ahead and bought it. I'm not sure which model it is, but by the measurements, I'm guessing 55006. At 18" tall, I think it will be a little bit of a challenge for my bigger dog, at 62 lbs and 25" at the withers. If it doesn't work out I'm sure we can resell pretty easily though, since we've only got $175 into it.

$175.00? You got a heck of a deal. 175 wouldn't cover the cost of materials these days

+1! You stole that box. Hope it works for you, but no risk whatsoever if it doesn't.

That's kind of what we figured. If it turns out to be too short, we can resell and maybe up the price a little, to go towards a taller Owens box.

Up the price?

If it doesn't work why not pass the deal onto someone else who could use it?

If you will pay the difference to purchase the taller Owens box, more than likely new--since it won't be found used, I will gladly pass the box on for exactly what I paid for it. :D
