Dog in Heat and age of male dog

Post by Brittlver » Thu Nov 03, 2011 10:12 am

Molly is finally in heat at 13 months of age. I have my unfixed male dog "Hunter" kenneled with her. He is 5.5 months of age. Do I need to worry about those to getting together? I was told he is to young to fix right now. Should I bring them inside for the month and kennel them in there? Thanks for all the help.

I would separate them..Just because he is young doesn't mean he can't accidentally get the job done

If he is old enough to think about it he is old enough to do it. Are you planning on separate kennels in the future?

Besides the risk of puppies, which, at that age, he could easily create, there is also the possibility of her tearing into him over unwanted attention. Keep them apart.

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and brought them in. They will now be staying in the house for the next month and a half until I know for sure she is out of heat. Can't wait till he's fixed. LOL

I have high hopes for Molly and like her breeding. I might in the future sometime breed her but am not sure yet. Hunter will be getting fixed in the next 2 months. I will be deciding on Molly by end of next summer.

Most experienced, sensible dog people would advise you to neuter only after they are at least a year old due to enhanced muscle development etc.

Not even! And, a good way to get a surgery bill when one of them eats them. That trick works for protecting furniture and for incontinence, but not for birth control.
