What to do?? Need some advice.

Post by jcbuttry8 » Fri Oct 28, 2011 3:44 pm

Alright, expected in DE tomorrow for a walking trial with my pup. It is supposed to rain then turn to snow. Just wanted to know what you would do. She is in the last walking pup for a while and would really like to run her. She has never ran in the rain and has never seen snow. I would like to take her just to get her used to the conditions. She needs to learn sooner or later. \

Also, What if anything can you put on your dog during a trial. I have a pointer and we all know how short they are on hair. Does anyone out there use any kind of cover for the dog or do you just let them do their do and then put them up.

This may be a dumb question but only my third trial and still need heavy doses of advice. It is an AKC event.

Thanks,

Joe

I don't think you want to show up with your dog wearing a sweater. When you first arrive you should put her out for awhile. Then if the weather is real bad put her away until just before it is time to run I like to stake them out again.

Well I was looking at a pretty pink knit.  I didn't think so. I was asked if i had neoprene for her. Have never used it on a dog. I have seen it used for duck hunting when the dog is out for hours but our run should be 15 to 20. Didn't think I needed anything other than my dog. I agree. I think I am going to run her. I live in an area where most think i am evil for my dog living in a kennel. So, there was much concern for her running in the rain. Mostly the ladies of the house i currently live in and pay for. Thanks for the help

Get a shammy to dry her off if needed, keep the vehicle warm but not hot and make sure you have something to drink to warm you up like hot chocolate.

Coffee only for me. I thought this would be all she needs. Just didn't want to show up and look a fool because i didn't have something that most would use. She has been taught from the beginning that she goes out no matter what to go tinkle. She is still the only dog in the house that will go out in the rain and go. She will come in soaked but never goes in the house. That was one lesson she picked up real quick.

Thanks Cajun,

Joe

Funny you should mention that. Just got my new pair yesterday. The old pair sprung a leak just last week. God bless MUCK. Real excited. Just got the running order tomorrow. She is braced with another pointer. I am looking forward to seeing another pointer pup run. Seen plenty of shorthairs. Even have a Vizla and a Gordon setter in the mix. God I love this.

The snow and rain won't mean anything to that pup. Just go and let her do what she is bred to do. After done just wipe her down and put her in her crate with straw or wool blanket and you are good to go.
I suppose you could get a pair of battery powered sock boots for her.
Good luck.

Joe, I have run her sire and dam in -30 degree weather here in the panhandle and they were fine. She shouldn't need anything covering her. This is a Pointer not one of those GSP's you used to run.

Exactly. I don't think EPs are smart enough to realize they are freezing.
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

I don't run Pointers for their intelligence just like I didn't marry my wife for her cooking skills. They are the best at what they do. Finding and pointing birds.

Agreed 100%! I love to cook, and wanted great bird dogs, not smart dogs.

:D Tommy that's cool your wife can find and point birds too given that she doesn't cook all that great. Does she have your password? :D
