Yup, that's the way my buddies D90's work I think. Personally I don't like it as well as the button system my Sony uses as I tend to continue holding the lens barrel/zooming as I'm firing and want to be sure the thing is autofocusing. With the Nikon system, I think I'd futz it up continuing to manually override the autofocus hanging onto the lens. More intuitive for me to release my thumb from the override button and continue working the lens but like anything, you adapt to using what you got!

Good thing its Digital and I can just trash the bad ones. I agree Doug, I will take a ton of bad shots learning to get this method down but it doesn't cost extra money and it will be worth it.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!

Wow you all are taking some awesome pictures.

This is Indy from yesterday. Wish we had more birds around here this year, they have been hard to come by. But he is getting there slowly. He turned 7 months old today.

I thought this was a pretty good shot from Christmas day. It was taken in my wife's grandmother's backyard in Shreveport, LA. She's pointing something she shouldn't but the little kids got a kick out of it and I think it makes a nice pic...

This isn't the greatest picture, but it is Indy 's first bird that I shot and recovered over one of his points.
I missed several birds over him and lost a couple, but finaly the ice is broken. Dang near ran out of season

Indy is 7 months old, Ace is my 3 year old Chestnut standing behind Indy.

Just another day of roading in the Great White North. 8 degrees above and only 10 miles on the machine today. Could have been worse, I could have been working! Sorry about the longtail, the other side was full.

Here are a few pics of the action with the dogs. That shooting was not the best :)

This is my buddy Brice, walking in on a single pointed by Ace my 3 yo
Image

Ace pointed a covey down in the bottom of this draw
Image

My 8 month old pup Indy came up behind, not sure if this was a back or a point.
Image

I walked in.
Image

The birds came up well down in the bottom to the right of the picture. And yes I flipping missed!
Image

Thats the end of the season for me and the dogs.

A NP today. I don't doubt there was a bird there at some point. In the last week or two, we've seen a hen 3x out in the corn stubble field or in the fence row, when running the dogs off the ATV. The little cheapo point & shoot did me no favors, but since the ATV was slinging mud everywhere, it was probably the best choice. :D

How much does Willie weight? My pup Indy is 8 months old too. Indy is about 37 pounds.
In those pictures Willie looks a little bigger, but it may be that he has a heavier coat.

Willie weighed 34.5 2 weeks ago. I would imagine he has gained a couple in the last couple weeks. I think the camera makes him look a little bigger than he is.

He is a nice looking pup. Did you get a chance to hunt him this past season. I got Indy out the last half of the season here. He did real well, even with a really low bird number year.

Good luck with him, and keep posting some pics of him as he fills out.

Some super nice pics to look at on this thread!

These are just a few pics I snapped today. I had my camera out to get some pics of a rescue helicopter coming in nearby, but ended up getting distracted. :D

Image
Brandi giving me the look of, "If you don't want to hunt, I'll go find my own fun without you."

Image

Image
I'm baaaaaack!

Roxi grew up as the only pointing dog for a few years, so I never got the opportunity to see her back. We seem to do very few backing drills in my NAVHDA chapter, probably because only the VC level requires it. The times she's hunted with Brandi or friend's dogs, the thick cover isn't very conducive to backing. And then there have been a few frustrating times where she downright rudely charged in. :x So in sitting in the field, they were both gone for a bit, and I decided to get up and see what they were up to. On the other side of the hill, I found Brandi working the fenceline. She went on point several times, I think over a rabbit, and Roxi followed her up with 3 or 4 different backs. Some weren't so stylish, but I'll take what I can get, and it's good to see the instinct is there to work with.

Image

Image
A pic of my antique. Sammy the shelter lab mix will be 15, on her made up birthday in April. She was approximately 4 months old when we got her, and not a bad pheasant dog, despite having super bad trainers.

Image
Brandi found the kiddie pool, even though I hadn't brought it down for the summer yet. There was just enough snow melt water in it to satisfy.

Willie on some woodcock last week on our Farm. Had 6 points on 4 birds. 2 points were repeat birds. I was proud of him this day. He still will not hold point to allow me to flush. He tries to catch the bird when I get close, but that will correct over time with training. For 8 months old, he is doing fantastic in the field.

This is the "long field". It is all but a mile long, the old farm house is over the hill just to the left of the pic.
