Shipping or Flying to Alaska?

Post by mountaindogs » Sun May 22, 2011 1:11 pm

I have a puppy going to Alaska. Does anyone have any advice on carriers to use or not? It will be mid June and I will be hard pressed to get any airport in the south to ship in that heat. So there is a good chance I'll have to drive a ways, anyway...

Has anyone ever traveled with a puppy as carry-on? This would be my preferred option, but I am worried that the puppy will be too big by then (12 weeks.) I think crate can only be 9.5" tall...

SO any help would be great...

I used Continental Airlines a few years back when I went to Alaska. My pup went under the plane, but they told me that I could have held her in my lap if I had a collapsible crate.

I am bringing my two (lab and GSP) with me in mid-Jun from Florida to Fairbanks, Alaska -- flying Delta the whole way. Too big for carry-ons obviously, so they will be below in the climate controlled baggage compartment for a couple hundred $ a piece.

Some carriers are shipping with no heat restrictions from certain hubs..Atl is one hub that has no restrictions now. (Delta and Continental)...I am flying a dog from there via Continental next week, will go to Vegas...Delta will fly with no restrictions from Atl too...But it has to make the connection in another major airport. This dog will connect in Houston...When I came back from AK I connected in Minnisota and Memphis....You might have to drive to Atl tho for the first departure...

I am glad this post came up. I have a pup going to Mexico but it wont be until August. I am hoping they will fly up and take the pup back as carry on instead of trying to ship.

The ferry from Seattle to Alaska is one fine ride :)
