Please don't pretend that pointer people don't care about aesthetics.
Thank you Andy. It has been hard keeping my mouth shut when we read about all pointer people care about is performance. Color is a monor thing but a perfect tail is essential for a birddog.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

It is not something that most people want to see. The dog is registered as either black or liver. I believe it is a recessive, but I'd have to look it up. Pointers could come by it honestly, from foxhound influence back over a hundred years. Some attribute it to more recent and less honest introduction of setter blood.

I've never seen a black tri pointer, but have seen ghost tan on the faces of a couple of livers, brow spots and along the cheeks.
There is no written standard for pointers so there is no distinct pattern it should appear in. As already said it has been around for a long time.

I would think the AKC standard does apply to FDSB Pointers, at least in principle. Early on there were bench shows as part of field trials, including the first one in the US in1873 in Memphis. As late as the 30's Mary Montrose took Reserve Bitch at the Westminster Show after a train ride following one of her NC wins. She was a true Dual Champion.

What does a tail have to do with performance? We may not trial a bad tail but i will hunt behind one. I dont understand how it is essential for a bird dog ?

There should be some doubt about that little long haired pup being part of that slick haired litter. As far as tri color, I have seen a few and If those dogs have any setter in them it would have been 100 years ago if at all.

So how do you tell all of that from a picture?
