"THE GREEN THING"
"THE GREEN THING"
"THE GREEN THING"
In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."
The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."
He was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day.
Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.
But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.
In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.
But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.
Back then, they washed the baby's diapers because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.
But that old lady is right, they didn't have the green thing back in her day.
Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana.
In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you.
When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
But she's right, they didn't have the green thing back then.
They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water.
They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.
But they didn't have the green thing back then.
Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.
They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a
computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.
But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?

Come on now, tvs were so small cause there was nothing on and in black and white..... we did walk to school, was 1.5 miles flat both ways but we took our shotguns and ammo, teacher put them into the closet, we hunted our way home. We grew up farmers, we worked bean fields for 10 cents an hour, picked tassels off corn plants for the same. Fished the elkhorn and ate fish we caught 2 or 3 times a week. No corner store, once a month we went to town and stocked up, was a long drive, we hung over the lowered station wagon rear door and watched the road pass by. we re used our "cans" cause we canned every year, no tin cans on our place we didnt eat store bought veggies, or jelly, or jam, or apples, or eggs, or chickens, or beef we did our own. Seems we went to the store for stuff like coffee, sugar, flour the staples.

While the clerk's comments were inappropriate, I have to say anyone who is old enough to remember some of the things mentioned may not need to be driving.

I remember those days and I drive just fine. My grandkids can't believe that at one time I did not have an indoor bath room and used sears and montgomery ward catalogs for toilet paper. Ya, I remember those days when we returned the glass bottles to be used over again and hanging clothes on the line [my wife still does that sometimes] and while I am spoiled and like our modern conveniences, I feel fortunate to have had the experience. I am pretty sure there are several members on here that remember those days too and it hasn't impaired our driving one bit!Cajun Casey wrote:While the clerk's comments were inappropriate, I have to say anyone who is old enough to remember some of the things mentioned may not need to be driving.

Remember those days? Clothes went on the line yesterday. Nice to have the spring weather finally. The beer bottles get refilled every time I make a new batch. Still eating the potatoes from last years garden and will have enough for seed this year.
Unfortunately I do still have to drive.

You don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. Arrogance and knowing it all goes along with youth, but remember this, don't take youth for granted because it doesn't last. That is not a bad thing though because then you will realize that you didn't know half of what you thought you did. That's what they all say about the time we are calling AAA to retrieve their keys, lift them off the median or tow them out of our front window.

When someone drives off and leaves their walker on the sidewalk, it's time for reconsidering their transportation. This happened at my work about a month ago.
As far as the topic at hand, the "Green" movement is a huge marketing ploy. You don't need green if you don't have wanton consumption. I love the "recycled content" products, like dog kennels that reuse plastic trimmings repeatedly until the new item is too brittle to withstand any abuse whatsoever. Dog toys are like that, too. People buy "green" toys that are destroyed and then throw them out. One of my biggest sellers is a cordura sleeve you use to "recycle" a water bottle into a dog toy. Guess what, you still throw the bottle away in the end, but now you will eventually have a piece of shredded cordura to dispose of, too. But, the concept sells. Drink tap water and give the mutt your holey socks.

Hey! I get the impression you are pretty young. I was born in '46 and I remember all those things. Add on "no pre packaged food". Everything cooked from scratch. 7 kids who were fed by what Dad shot and killed.Cajun Casey wrote:While the clerk's comments were inappropriate, I have to say anyone who is old enough to remember some of the things mentioned may not need to be driving.
And yes , starting in grade 1 , I walked 1.5 miles to school and back all year. Not one kid driven by car and dropped off. NO fat kids.
PS I'm still driving well.

None of the happy conditions in the OP are obsolete. The fact that they are not as prevelant today speaks mostly to the market and supply and demand. I for one would LOVE to reuse every bit of packaging, and for everyone to tear out their lawns and plant vegetable gardens. I think our grandparents and greatgrandprents had it right. Of course there was far fewer of them, and most of them made do with a lot less money. And they didn't have plastic or Wal-Mart....

Lest you be a small store owner nearby.
Might as well tar Cabela's with that brush while we are at it.
My great uncle ran a country store, another uncle ran another country store, good friends of my grandparents ran yet another country store in SE Ohio...all within 10 crow miles of each other.
Two were post offices....no gasoline pumps.
While the appeal of creaky floors with slamming screen doors displaying RC Cola signs, dusty bins and buying one bolt has an appeal, The Mart obviously has an appeal to many as well.
I will also say that some small country store owners knew they had a monoply and could be real jerks.
Memory can be selective.

I seen some older people that really need to be off the road. Was on a hwy one day and pass some old lady doing 30 down the middle of the hwy with everyone passing her at 75.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Things defiantly have changed over the years. I wish people swap places with each other Old to New and New to Old. It would really would be an eye opener.

You know one of my biggest disappointments is that my kids and that would include most of you never got to experience the things I grew up with. I don't want to go back to those days as some things are much better now, but not all, but I just wanted you to know what it wa like. Maybe people would be happier with what they have if thy could experience a time when we didn't have it.

What was we talking about? speak up would ya?I have to say anyone who is old enough to remember some of the things mentioned may not need to be driving.
Milk delivery was over in the 70s, not that long ago.....
We did take off ourr shoes in spring time on our walk home.
Which is really funny, we moved to Omaha. the walk to school was longer in town and hilly. Sucked moving to town, country living is where its at. Didnt even try to take a shotgun to school.....
But I dont miss things like bad milk, Grandparents lost 2 from that.
Anyone got a 50s bomb shelter?

We have a new airport, first one built since 911. It advertises as being a green operation. Electric shuttle carts, trash bins for recycling, ect. Funny all the bins for recycling are emptied into the same trash bins to be hauled off to the incinerator!
