It depends on how far you condition them to Fly home.

My pigeon guy flies his regularly (or used to) about 400 miles in an afternoon. Don't know if he did that often or just once a week. We regularly fly ours about 10 miles a few times a week.

In the 50's and 60's my grandfather used to drive a truck load of pigeons from Bostom to Sanduski OH, and turn them loose for a pigeon club a few times a year. Im not sure how far that is but they homed.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

You start them out gradually when young after they've loft flown for about two weeks.Release at one mile a couple of times then 2-3 miles, then 5,10,15,25 up to about 40.After returing from 40 they'll return from Any distance,if they're good birds with good homing instinct.Sounds like the 400 mile trip your pigeon guy makes is a weekly trip to the race station for a club race.
