Did something stupid. Probably cost me rest of the season.

Post by mrcreole » Mon Jan 10, 2011 9:34 pm

I did something really stupid Saturday and now I'm screwed! We went duck hunting in the rice fields Saturday morning. Figured we would hit the woodcock hole on the way home so we brought the dogs.

Now the dumb part: Once we made it to the woodcock hole I failed to change into proper upland boots. Out of pure laziness I kept the loose knee boots from the duck hunt on. After a short time and 3 woodock later I rolled my left ankle badly. Made crunching noises. Hurt so bad I vomitted. Woodcock hunt over and a mile from the truck.

Was hoping it was just a bad spraign. After two sleepless nights and hobbling on crutches I got it x-rayed today. Avulsion frature of the medial talus. 4-6 weeks in an immobilizer boot!

Woodcock and duck end this month. I'm sick. Don't make the same mistake I made. Proper footwear is a must!

My brother broke his leg moose hunting in BC last week.

His leg slipped down between two Douglas Fir trunks on the ground, and as he fell forward - snap.

His Son had to do a fireman's carry to get him out of the bush.

I hunt alone so always carry a cell phone just in case - not that an ambulance could find me.:)

Very sorry about your injury.

Very sorry about your injury.

I turkey hunt quite a bit and finally got a cell phone several years ago - it was a relief (or so I thought) because I hunt in a 2 hour radius from home and sometimes will decide where to hunt after leaving my house. Found out my phone (verizon) is useless most places I hunt. It concerns me a bit so as I've gotten into middle age I've gotten a little more cautious and will carry some emergency gear in my day pack.

Oooohhh.......... very sorry to hear about your accident. Be sure to let this heal right the first time,
as this could become a lingering problem if not allowed proper down time.

Best of luck with your recovery.

MrCreole,
Did almost the same thing, it hurts like the devil and man its been 3 weeks now and I am just starting to be able to use my ankle decently again.
At least you did yours while hunting, I turned mine in my brothers drive way, and went down hard hitting concrete. Yep it sucks big time, take it easy and try to enjoy your
time off.

I got a spot you can woodcock hunt off of 4 wheeler really a strip of woods. Bring your dogs over you would only have to hobble 3-5 steps to be in position to shoot.

Come on over.

You posting flight activity on RGS site?

You know the wheels have been turning in my head on how to hunt with this Frank! Hurts like heck still but I think by next weekend I'm gonna give it a shot. Planning on duck hunting this weekend. Gonna get the son to bring me to and from the blind on the 4 wheeler. Hoping I can walk better in a week or so. The swelling is going down. I will touch base with you early next week. I need to start posting on the RGS site.

A few years ago I broke my left foot one week and two weeks later broke the right foot. Spent 6 weeks in casts and another 8 weeks in the boots. Wasn't during hunting season but did want to train, keep the dogs in shape and run a couple of hunt tests. If you can find the right size inner tubes, I slipped those over the boot and duct taped them like some do for dog boots. Kept them pretty dry and most of the dirt & grass from getting in.

Hope you get your butt out there somehow. However, I'm the ultimate optimist and I would be thanking God that it wasn't Gout. You wouldn't be able to have beers after hunting. That's PAINFUL.

I feel ya man. I bout cut two fingers off a couple years ago in a jeep fan (dont ask). I was down for 3months between skingrafts and surguries. Im sure I looked funny at training days with a cooler full of ice packs and changes of bandages but you do what you gotta. good luck with that ankle man. ill second the prompt for physical therapy get on it when the time comes.

Thanks so much for all of the support guys. Stood on if for three hours today in the operating room. About two hours into the nephrectomy I did today it hurt so bad my toes and forefoot seemed to go numb. On ice now.

Gonna give it a shot Saturday. Gonna get the boys to bring me to the duck blind on the four wheeler. Then gonna use Northern Cajun's suggestion of hunting off the atv for woodcock. There's a big powerline cut through a 500 acre woodlot on a friend of mine's farm. Will let you guys know how that goes. I know I'm gonna get cussed out by the little woman! LOL
