labor!!

Post by Brushbustin Sporting Dogs » Sun Jan 09, 2011 10:57 pm

How long before you get worried about if she's having trouble. Hot how 30minutes ago or so let her out to do her business. When she came back in she was acting worried and pacey. She's been trying but nothing yet. Maybe its been 30minutes...

It can be quite some time for the first one. Many times they may go several hours before getting into hard labor. Think you will know if she is really struggling by her actions.

As long as she isn't pushing consistently straining and nothing showing like it is coming out it can be a long time.
Some females they just push out pups no problems and others struggle.

Some will also go through more evident stages of labor. Make note of when she gets worried paces circles and digs and how long it lasts..You will see how her labor advances. plus just in case there is any problems the vet may ask when she did certain things and if you just jot it down you will be more precise in info.

Good Luck

sometimes them smaller ones are harder for them to push out then the bit bigger ones
I wonder if she is going to have a bunch of pups I know when my one female many years ago had a small pup she had 15 more that were small 12 survived. That was the last time I bred that female I do not like large litters like that...
Do you have a scale?

NO scale. Just comparing the size to the litter I had two weeks ago. This bitch has been hard to breed and I don't think I will try with her again. I don't think she's going to have more than a couple. There is something wrong with her reproduction system I think. PRob just get her spayed this summer.

If she stalls out on you after a couple hours what you can do it if you have a shower head or a hose of some sort that you can bring down get the water in a warm stream and spray her vulva in circular type motions and with a very clean finger insert your finger about an inch or so and tickle the upper part of her vaginal canal this is called feathering and it can stimulate contractions.

An hour between pups--you'll be up all night!!! Tell her to keep shucking them out and I'll keep sending buyers your way. I gave a guy(Smith) from Ashland your name on Friday. You better get off the machine and back to your ob job.

Watched football and on the compter--I've got dial up so the phone doesn't ring when I'm on it. Has she started feeding them yet??? If she hasn't fed them she is probably getting ready to have another pup. My pups usually come about every 20-30 min. until she gets towards the end when it goes to about 45 to 1 hour on the last 1 or 2

Wait till she is done she may still not be completely settled with the waves of contractions. once she is done she should relax and begin being a good momma

She's pretty high strung and I am also. I just get to worryin so much. She had the first one almost 2 hours ago. I did get her on a teet and she should've been able to get some go her belly. Time will tell what the total outcome will be!!

Rob, Sounds like everyone did well and normal but you. :? Being hard to breed the first time is not abnormal and has nothing to do with her maternal instincts. And the puppie do not need to nurse for quite some time after birth. Remember, all they are needing is a little colostum to get everything working and then after a couple of days they will start needing a little milk from Mom. Too bad you didn't have a couple more but that will work for the first litter. Good luck and get some sleep.
