Pup terrorizing cats
Pup terrorizing cats
I purchased a 7-month setter pup last week. He is obsessed with chasing our cats through the house every chance he gets. The cats have been hiding in the basement for the last three days, and the pup will poke his head through the cat door and peer downstairs (basically, he's on a very intense point) for 15 minutes or more. You pull him away from the door and he goes right back to it. When the cats go outside, he's jumping up onto the window sill and going crazy. I would love some suggestions for breaking this habit sooner rather than later. Would a shock collar be appropriate for chasing cats?

Yup, shock collar would work. I just smacked them in the head when they bothered the cat, and that pretty much cured them all, but a shock collar would have saved my hand some

Give them the command "leave it" or "No" when you shock them. I have never been able to get my DD to stop messing with them, but I did my Brits.
Speak kindly to me, beloved master. Revel in my unconditional love, and give me every minute that you can spare, for my time with you is short.

Dog's are supposed to go after cats. It is called prey drive, but yes, the e-collar should work. Although, I would still not trust them together with nobody around. It probably wouldn't be a problem if they had been raised together. JMO.

Mine kill cats especially my 9 year old setter. Cats use up all 9 lives if they enter my yard.
Re: Pup terrorizing cats
my best freind gowing up had a setter bitch that HATED cats. more than once he watched her kill and eat barn kittens. if we ever came across a cat while hunting we had to grab her by the collar and drag her away or we would never find anymore birds until the cat was dispatched.

Thats why I always try to have cat that won't run when we have a litter of pups. Have a big black tom around now that loves to play with the dogs and they learn that there is no big thrill in chasing something that won't run.

Dogs that dispatch cats save me money on bullets... Lead prices have really gone up!

Re: Pup terrorizing cats
We have a cat in the house and after a few "no's" and "leave it's" things got better. My avatar dog will now only chase the cat if it gets up on the table or counter as he has heard all of us yell at the cat for this also. Our newer pup just wanted to lick the cat and play with it some then she leaves it be. But she does want to say "hi" to her every time she sees it. Are your cats declawed? If so make a meeting happen under supervision. Just a thought.
