Puppy question
Puppy question
In advance I'd like to thank you all for a great forum. I've kept tabs lately and I like what I've seen. The reason I've been keeping closer attention is due to the fact my wife got me a Pudelpointer for our 15th. Talk about being stoked! I pick her up in six weeks (born a week ago today).
The one issue that has come up is that for ~a six to seven day stretch during the first couple weeks of December my family will be on a vacation we've had planned and paid for quite awhile ago meaning we are going to be away from the pup. This also means that we'll more than likely have to board her. I love the boarding facility we use but this timing falls right into the key deveopmental period for the pup. Is there a potential for some issues being away for that time during that age?
Thoughts, comments, etc are more than welcome.

Re: Puppy question
Is the breeder close enough that you might be able to board her there?
Re: Puppy question
Not really. It's a 4-5 hour drive oneway.
Re: Puppy question
Have you thought about having the breeder keep her a little longer. He should be aware of the importance of socialization during this period, maybe he would still have some littermates for her to play with. I have done that for some of my buyers.

Re: Puppy question
I was completely caught off-guard; hence, my excitement blocked out the vacation for a few days. Didn't even think to talk about that with the breeder. If I were to wait and p/u later then that would be 4-5 weeks of time I wouldn't be spending with the pup. Dogs aren't cheap and new family members are priceless so I don't want to lose out on any more valuble time than necessary. I'm sure he'd take her back for the time I'm gone. Maybe I should rethink the 4-5 hour drive.
Re: Puppy question
My preference would be to have the breeder watch her rather than a boarding kennel . I know you are anxious to get her , but maybe you could just leave her with the breeder until after vacation.

Re: Puppy question
Along the same lines, anyone see a problem boarding a 6-month old GSP for three days? Never had to board a pup that young, so I'm curious of your opinions...
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Puppy question
If it were me, I'd be looking to a close friend/hunting buddy or family member that could watch the dog. That being said, I'd leave him @ the "right" boarding kennel, if I had to. I've yet to have occasion where I had to leave my pup (9 months) @ a boarding kennel, but I have left him there for the day several times, just for the experience. He's happy to go there now, so when we go on vacation it won't be a big deal. Sorry that you have this problem so soon into the bonding/development though.

Re: Puppy question
I to would seek someone who could watch the pup. One week as long as the place is friendly will not hurt the pup at all. Many time as long as pup is socialized not babied they hardly miss you

Re: Puppy question
The best idea is to stay with the breeder, hope they have a spare spot for him.
