Young dog growling at old dog........

Post by Nebraska » Mon Sep 20, 2010 8:18 pm

For the most part, our dogs get along very well but every once in awhile our young female will get a little snotty with the old female and will growl and show signs of dominance. It usually happens around the food/water bowls but when I take the young one running, she'll will occassionally get growly when we get back (like she doesn't recognize our old dog).

Is this normal?

Is this OK, and if not, what should I be doing about it?

Thanks....

is it normal? Idunno
Is it unusual? No.

First off I would seperate them at feeding time. Put some space between them. I have 3 dogs in the house 1 Lab and 2 Pointers. They eat and sleep in the same area. All of them are buddies and a pack. However I space their food bowls apart a good few feet for this very reason. Dogs are protective of their food.

I would nip the growling at the other dog in the bud ASAP. This is a dicipline issue, and needs to be dealt with as such. IMO

Hope this helps. :D

When your youg dog growls throw her on her back in front of your old dog so she has to be the dominated one. Stare into the young ones eyes until she looks away. Don't ever put up with that stuff at all!
Speak kindly to me, beloved master. Revel in my unconditional love, and give me every minute that you can spare, for my time with you is short.

NEBRASKA- There you have it... That's how I handle it if they won't stop doing it with a rap on the ol noggin. Usually a few times of a VERY Stern voice sayin "NO!" followed by a rap up side the head, will stop this behavior. However, some dogs are thicker headed than others and need to be thrust into a submissive role weather they like it or not.. that's where BDOGZ approach comes in.

Sorry I didn't post a "how to method" I musta had too many raps upside my head when I was younger..
