The "Pointers in water" post got me thinking

Actually had not thought of my 6 month EP liking or disliking water.
I work her 10 to 15 minutes each evening on retrieving very near our catfish pond so Friday I tossed the dummy over in the pond, she'd take a couple steps out into the water then back up just chomping at the bit. Gave her one louder than normal "dead" command and she busted it out into the water, retrieved the dummy and promptly delivered to hand. She absolutely loves it! Let her make 5 or 6 trips back into the pond after that.
Every evening since when I open her gate she makes a beeline for the pond, sits on her haunches waiting on me to get there.
Thanks Tommy, now I smell like wet dog when I walk back in the house...or so I'm told! :D

Just get a photobucket, or similar, account. Once you have them uploaded it's a simple matter of pasting the link to the pic. Once you figure it out, it takes 5 seconds to post a pic (said by the guy who hasn't taken a pic of his dog in months) :mrgreen:

We just had a Pointer, get a NAVHDA, Prize 2 Utility score with a high score of 4 on the duck search. That dog loved that duck search and the Marked retrieves. And this dog is a 200 yard range or more dog in open field and draws back in tighter cover. But he absolutely loves water. In fact, Billy got him as a five year old and it had never done any NAVHDA type work other than field.

I am glad your dog enjoys the water as well. Mine love it and take a chance to play in it every chance they get.

Swimming is a habit I wish I could break my dogs of. More than once I have been brought a dead $25.00 call duck. I could kill 'em. Now the older dogs are teaching my pup to join in. He just dove in last night. Let me see if I can get some pics uploaded.

I am new to the gun dog life but i am a big duck hunter and wanted a different dog than all my hunting buddies so i just bought a female german shoirthaired pointer i love the breed but is there any way to encourage her to enjoy water?

Normally just run them when it is hot, and take them to a pond. Have your dog FFed. Then it is a command to fetch where ever the bird is.

ALMOST all dogs like water when it's hot(unless they are stupid). Not a big deal :roll: . I have seen 30+ pointers just in the last 12 months and every one of them liked water (especially when hot). It is way more uncommon to find a pointer that does'nt like water.

For birddogz, I promise my dog will retrieve in the same cold water as your DD (and as many times) because I have seen him do it. I would love to take you up on some good bird hunting. Let me know :D .

A GSP that does not like water?
How old is the dog?
If he likes bumpers you can play a lot on land then when he is really worked up and having fun,
whoops the bumper goes in the water a short distance. Work do that for a bit then little further etc. sometimes you need to go into the water your self up to your waste. Play with him get him excited.etc.

He must like birds, throw dead birds for him short at first so he cans see them.
I also use live quail on occasion. They will swim a few time before they sink.
Small ducks wing clipped can get them out there.
Another go for walks with streams, you cross and go sit down till he comes or walk away a little.
Other dogs playing in the water with bumpers retrieved can create compettion and your pup may just join in.

Keep it fun, don't pressure him, don't get down, just be matter of fact, they can read your emotions. If he does not do it one day just wait a few days a go back.

hey thanks for all the advice i actually had my pup out last night with my friends lab. we were out in the swamp playing with bumpers and she had her first little swim. she is only 15 weeks but she was hyper as could be the whole time in and out. i was verry happy with her first trip to the swamp

My pup had her first real swim tonight on a duck shoot in a swamp. turns out she loves water afterall.
