entreprenuership idea

Post by bean1031 » Tue Aug 17, 2010 4:31 pm

Today I was thinking of ways to earn a little cash to save up for my first car and mabbey a gun. I was thinking lawn mowing bussines, summer job at the grocery store ect and thats when it hit me DOG TRAINER. When I was younger I saved up and bought my dog on my own with a dog walking and sitting bussiness and made a lot of money once I established a customer base over a few years. If I were to fallow through with this idea I wouldnt be training world class gundogs, just obiediance for neighborhood foo foo dogs and couch potatoes. I hear all the time that I have the best behavied dog in the neighborhood. What do you guys think? is there a little cash to be made? good idea bad idea?

It's a great idea, if you can deal with owners undoing everything you do, wondering why their dog only listens to you, and recoil in fear when you repremand their dog or mention the ecollar. I would look for people who are at work all day and need someone to get their dog out, and train at the same time. Stay away from "froo froo" dogs, as they are very difficult to train and require a lot of patience.

Talk to your vet, and donate some time working with rescues to get some experience and refrences, then go from there. If you stick with it and do a good job there is a decent living to be made, and their will always be dogs that need training no matter where in the world you go. But I will warn you, when you factor in an ignorant owner it becomes exponentially more frustrating, don't think it's going to be a cake walk....IMO public obedience is more difficult than breaking bird dogs.

Good Luck, it's a great idea!

The owners undoing all your training are simply "job security". Regard them as anything else. I don't mind training dogs. It is the dumb%$# owners that try the patience. Go for it..........

Hope you don't plan on doing field trials, because now youd be considered a pro.

The pet/house sitting thing is pretty good. No startup costs. No ongoing costs. Might have to look into insurance or a bond in case someone had a brain cramp and accused you of stealing something.

How so? The poster stated it was along the lines of, "I wouldnt be training world class gundogs, just obiediance for neighborhood foo foo dogs and couch potatoes."

I believe the phrase in the AKC Field Trial Rules & Regulations book reads something to the affect of:

"Anyone who receives any renumeration or services in return for dog training of any kind."

When defining a pro.

Here's the money quote:
An Amateur is a person who, during the period of two years preceding the trial has not accepted remuneration in any form for the training of a hunting dog or the handling of a dog in a field trial.
For purposes of this definition the word remuneration means payment in money, goods or services.
No member of the household of a person who does not qualify as an Amateur under this definition can qualify as an Amateur.
For purposes of the foregoing definition, the word household means those persons that comprise a unit living together in the same shared dwelling.
An Amateur (as defined above) may run any number of dogs wholly owned by him or her, or members of his or her immediate family (as defined in Chapter 14, Section 5) but shall not run more than three dogs that are not so owned in any amateur stake.
So a person can indeed own/operate a obedience training facility and still be considered an amateur by AKC.

Cool guys thanks for the input! Im not to worried about AKC. First off i dont activley compete my dog. Second off most people in the dog training world wont be that rude and would have some understanding. Thats as low a tax collector asking a 10 year old for sales tax on their lemonade stand. What do you guys think would be a decent going rate?
