check out my new backing dog
check out my new backing dog
I did not want to spend all that money on a backing dog so I found a guy on the internet to blow up a picture of my dog rosie and I put it on plywood and cut it out. From 50 feet its hard to tell the fake dog. Check it out. cost $10

How cool! So much more realistic. Neat idea..
Re: check out my new backing dog
A question: Does it spring/release into the upright position?
Or is it static?

May all your dog's points be productive & your arrows avoid all timber
Re: check out my new backing dog
I cut one out of plywood and painted it white, got the idea from Paul Longs book, works good. Mine's stationary but am thinking about some kind of spring system.
Good whiskey,good dogs, no BS!

Wow... you did a great job!
Once you get the "formula" on how to make a pop up one, can you please post instructions? There are many on here who would really appreciate it!
Pax,

That's a cool idea, not very expensive IMO, and takes some work out of making one...since you don't have to paint and have a cutting outline to work with.
How do you have it mounted to the plyboard...staples, spray adhesive, or what? Is it printed on any kind of waterproof material, or would a person have to clearcoat over it (if possible) to try to make it waterproof? I'm mostly a fairweather trainer, but have been known to forget things outside.

Re: check out my new backing dog
Very nice. If any of you bow hunters are familiar with "Renzo" decoys, that is how the founder started. I met him at a local advertising outing. He wanted to get to the woods quick after work but did not have his decoy with him. He took one of his deer photos and enlarged it up via Photoshop or Illustrator. Sent it to his color printer, tiled them together and glued them to some heavy cardboard that was laying around his studio...with spray adhesive. Folded them up, and went bow hunting. staked them in the ground.
Started the "decoy" biz, poured a lot of money and time into it and I "believe" eventually sold it.

Re: check out my new backing dog
Thanks , the backing dog does not pop up I stapled a metal stake to the back and I just stick her in the ground. I then lead the dog up to it. I saw my pro trainer do it this way. I dont think I will have to use it but a few times with each dog before they get it. As for building it I cut the picture out and then traced it on and old piece of plywood and cut it out with a jig saw. I glued the picture on with regular wood glue I brushed on. I got the metal stake from one of those corogated plastic signs they stick in the side of the road everyplace and stapled it to the back. I did not waterproof it. I put it in the front yard and told the wife there was a stray dog outside she looked out the window and thought it was really our dog Rosie she weres glasses but it was funny.

If you think you can or if you think you can't, you are right either way
Re: check out my new backing dog
you could use a launcher to make the backing dog spring up if you attached that to the launcher then when you popped the launcher the dog would be standing up.
kick'em up knock'em down
Re: check out my new backing dog
Very Nice! That looks a lot like the dog I saw in the Field that won the American Brittany Club Eastern Shooting Dog Futurity!!
Re: check out my new backing dog
So, are you going to share the contact info on the guy who did this for you, or was this just a tease? Very good idea, BTW.
Two cannibals were eating a clown. One looks up at the other and says, "Does this taste funny to you?"
Re: check out my new backing dog
The dog whos picture was use for the backing dog is my dog Rosie and she is the 20101 eastern futurity gun dog winner.
The photo was enlarged by this company and I just found them by doing a web search there are several that do big enlargments for $10

As sjkennels said, there's gotta be a way to rig up the release using cheapo Radio Shack handsets just like the homemade launchers, don't you think? I've never worked through building one, but it can't be that much different - the latching system and spring, yes, but that should be it.SubMariner wrote:Wow... you did a great job!

Pax,
I think somebody should do a step-by-step project post for this to share with the GDF crew!
