Any morel mushroom hunters?

Post by Bones302 » Sun Apr 18, 2010 11:26 am

Does any of you mushroom hunt on Missouri Conservation Areas? I'm sure they get hit hard but the farm that I had access to for 2 years with great spots on is no longer available so trying to figure something out!

Have you tried the Prairie Slough area over around Elsberry? I have not been back to Missouri in years but my father has and if he goes at the right time of the year to visit our family he hunts mushrooms in that public area. I believe he was just there a few years ago and cleaned up. I am not sure how far you are from there but that is the only public area I am familiar with that has mushrooms. Much of my family lives around Elsberry and Troy but I live out in Oklahoma and haven't been back there in awhile. Good luck.

I think your main competition will be with turkey hunters. The season opens up today and public land will be chock full of them for the next two weeks.

I don't hunt in Missouri, but I've found 54 large-as-your-hand grey/yellow sponges this weekend. Quality over quantity I guess, but 54 is what we call a "good mess".

It seems that mushroom season is really just starting up around here. We've had beautiful weather for it.

Worst season in history here. I think the severe winter killed the spores for most of them. We did have a mess of the ones like steven described. Found almost no black morels. Too many mild winters where they came up early, but they got zapped this year in S. Illinois.

You know, I've got a small patch of black morels that were a no-show as well. I keep hoping to go out there and see a few, but I think they're lost this year. The grey/yellow's are going good, though.

Didn't see but one spike either. I'm hoping that they'll still be coming up though. We usually start to find them around mid-April and on into mid-May. We've had much better weather this year than last year (had snow on Apr. 6 last year according to our local news!), so I think maybe the early warmth has had something to do with the black morels taking a vacation.

Starting to hear people finding 20-30 around me which is 20 miles north of Kansas City, Missouri. I have a feeling my morels will be like my quail this year. SLIM TO NONE!

Got lucky tonight!!! I just received access to about 1200 acres of prime quail habitat for running the dogs. Went out for my first time and found the "mother load" of mushrooms. Came home and gained 10 pounds!!!!

Nice! I've only found 2 since my 54 last weekend. I guess I shouldn't have said anything!

At least you guys have them, they don't grow out here in the Oklahoma panhandle where I live, but we do have plenty of wild pheasant to work dogs on and a few quail.

I'd take your wild bird population over our mushroom numbers any day!!!

I sold a weim pup to a guy in Indiana a couple of years ago, and he trained her to hunt morels. He claims she's worth her weight in gold (or 'shrooms) :D

Picked about 1.5 lbs over the weekend. I give em away to my friends that like them. I cant stand em used to mow em over till my bud asked me if he could hunt em.

Got really full and gave away some to the land owner who lets us look for them and grandma. :D
