bad news

Post by ElhewPointer » Sat Feb 27, 2010 6:06 am

Keep my dog in your thoughts. While running in the Southeastern Championship yesterday, my dog Nella Running Tab was bit by a rattlesnake. Hopefully he can pull through.

Vagas,
Sorry to here about Ben. I was at the Southeastern Championship thursday and man was it cold. I would have never
thought about snakes but I guess it must have warmed up. I had wanted to see Ben run but had trouble on the way home
and did not get home untill 10 pm so 4 am was too early so I did not go Friday.

Hoping and praying for a full recovery,

I hope your pup is o.k. I hate hearing about things like this. I know hind sight is 20/20, but they now have rattlesnake vaccines for dogs. You may want to give it to your other dogs. "bleep" snakes.

here to hoping it was justa dry bite and Not a mohave rattler

Hope they get him on antibiotics as most the problems come from secondary infections. Had one of my dogs hit this summer he swoll up pretty bad but never got sick took him to the regular vet for clean up and antibiotics and with in 3 days he was almost back to normal had a small area of some sloughing skin which healed up rpetty quick

but if a mohave those are Nasty

as for the vaccine jusy is still out on the real effectiveness it has as I know dogs that were bit after the second booster in a vital area and still die but it was very evident the dog got juiced up big time as he was sick and down with in minutes after getting bit

and snake avoidance is good but it also will not prevent and accidental run over

prayer and Mojo headed your dogs way no matter what :(

Were they able to get anti venom into him? It saved one of my dogs once. Not sure the vaccine is good for eastern rattlers.. Hoping he pulls thru.........

I do hope he fully recovers, he is such a very nice dog, one of the best.

I think I remember that Strut was hit by a snake with no long lasting problems, but boy did he look rough for nearly a year.

That is Nasty. May be a long recovery but at least he has come this far. Again, Vagas, best wishes.

First of all, I just want to thank everyone for there kind words! That is what makes this forum great. Sometimes we disagree with each other about this and that. But the same guy you get in a pissing match with the day before is wishing you luck with your dog today. That is what makes the bird dog world great. Thanks again, it means a ton! This dog means the world to me. Some of you on here know what Ben means to me. It is just great to see all the kind words.

Talked with the Vet this morning. Ben is up and eating, wagging his tail and seems to be in a pretty good mood. They are going to do blood work today to find out what if any damage there is to the lungs, liver and kidneys.

sounds like he's making it

I had my female get hit by a bunch of bees- she went into a siezure- had to carry her 1/4 mile- I called my vet who met me at his office- by the time we got there she was ok- we did some blood work just in case

snakes worry me as they are all over the place here- so first thing I'm going to do when they start coming out is to show the Britt's they must stay away

keep us informed- but it looks like he's going to be fine

Watch him close when he gets back to going and cut him some slack. I've always heard that it takes them quite a bit of time to really get to firing on all cylinders again.

I'm not saying this well, but I mean things that don't show up on the vet's scans. Going on inside the dog's head. Could be neurological. Could be something as intangible as confidence. Who knows.

I've been blessed to never have a dog bitten. I know a couple of real old-time bird dog guys that have, though. They both told me the same thing about it.

Hoping for a full and speedy recover,

Greg J.

Glad to hear he's doing well.

When Shooter got bitten, he lost several pounds over the first few days until he could start eating and drinking again normally. Once he was back to 100%, his conditioning was pretty much kaput so we had to get him running and back into shape.

I think you'll find your boy will rebound very, very quickly once he's out of the woods.

Great new Vagas. I am hoping your boy has a complete recovery and is back to his old form by the end of the trial season.

Just a thought...have you collected him yet? If not, this summer, when he is in top shape, it might not be a bad time or a bad idea to get some semen frozen.

Well, here's the final report! I should now call this thread good news! Vet told me yesterday morning that he's never seen a dog bounce back as fast as Ben has. His face looks a little funny. Its shaved and still a little puffed up. No liver, kidney or lung damage. He can't have any workouts for a week or two. We are going to run him in the Missouri Championship! I want to thank all of you guys/gals for your kind words and thoughts. I'm blessed to have a special animal like Ben and feel very fortunate to have come through this with a clean bill of health. Thanks again!!!!

Great news, I have seen it a few times, very well conditioned and cared for dogs normally seem to make fast recoveries.
