Midwest Snow

Snow started about 11PM and it's been snowing ever since. Prediction for tonight: more snow. Prediction for tomorrow: yet more snow.

I'm OK with about 9 months of the year in Ohio, but the other three make me long for Alabama.

True in Illinois too. We have aout 6 inches and it has let up for a while at least.

Well I was all set with dogs to head out to Ind Trial in the a.m. and is canceled. Waiting to hear about the weekend trial. Ugh!!!!

Got 4" last night and more for the weekend predicted. Snow is ok with me but the Ice is really bad for the upland.

Snow has been on the ground here in southern Indiana continuously since January 10, that never happens. It absolutely has to be "Global Warming"

e got 2 feet few weeks ago, 10 inches last week, nearly 3 feet the other day and now they are callin for another 12-18 inches

We got 6" or so in the last 24 hours. I haven't seen the bare ground since December's first snowfall. And the last few snows have just camoflauged a slick layer of ice, that we got in an icestorm a couple weeks ago.

We got 10.2" here near Milwaukee. My husband (what a sweetie) snowblowed a bunch of paths thru the snow in the back yard, so our new GWP pup will have somewhere to go potty. It is pretty though!

It's been snowing pretty good here in the Oklahoma panhandle for the last 2 weeks. Every couple of days we get just a little bit more and usually here we get snow and then a melt and then maybe a bit more but there is not even the chance for a melt before we get more snow. I like it in November and December but heck it is February give me a break.

W have only had a total of about 3" here in S. Illinois the past few days. Windy and cold though.

When you have dogs here you have to put up at least a six foot high fence in the back yard because with two feet of snow on the ground you're barely left with a four foot fence. One year the dogs could just walk on the snow straight across the top of a four foot high high. Sometimes we have to blow snow off at the base of the fence to make escapes over the fence less obvious to the dogs.

Come on down, I could always use a training partner. We get some snow, a little bit more than normal this year though and a few tornados in the summer. Other than that you can train almost 10 months out of the year.

The last two batches of snow are pretty powdery. The V dog sinks up past his hocks. Now, remember that V dogs don't typically have a lot of hair on the undersides. With that in mind, you should see the look on his face and his general reaction when he squats for a #2 and "the boys" go down into the snow....

While we have had a mild winter in my valley only getting a few 12 inch storms the areas I like to hunt have been pounded. Two weeks ago we tried to give it a go and the dog could not stay above the snow on the south facing slopes where the snow melts the fastest.

That made me laugh Greg! I was walking down to the barn in my little footpath and I happened upon a nice doggie pile. I realized one of the red rats had used the beaten down snow as a their personal toilet. Kicked some snow over it and kept going with a smile on ym face.

We hunt November through the middle of February. The wind blows so hard in March and April it's a waste trying to put a dog out cause they will run right over birds cause they can't smell them so you only have a few good months to train and choice days during the other months. One extreme to the other in Oklahoma from the eastern to the western side of the state.

I lose a little bit of July and August also. I generally start early when it cool and finish off with a little water work or go late and just let'em run for a while and then cool down at the water. If you will condition them to the heat they can tolerate more than you think. Fortunately we have a few trees nearby for shade. The wind blows here too but the trees help block a lot of it, makes it hard when it is gusty though. You will have good scenting conditions one minute and then sorry the next. If mine run over the bird I launch it, good opportunity to work stop to flush.

My vizsla's need to smash the snow down before they squat down. And my fence doesn't seem to keep them in the yard any more.
