Best way to train by yourself?

Post by GSPVIZ » Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:14 pm

So what is the best way to train a dog by yourself?

My dog continues to creep when I go in for the flush. I don't have a partner to put a check cord around her flank while I go in for the bird.

Would it be best for me to control her with the check cord and flip out the bird with a launcher?

I am just afraid that when I will actually have to go in for the flush when I am hunting, she will keep her old habits.

Any thoughts?

lion country supply has a post that you anchor the check cord into the ground... before you flush... are you running an E collar?

Train in trees. When your dog goes on point, walk around a tree before you go in front of him. If the dog moves forward, the pressure on the checkchord will come from behind, as it is looped around a tree.

I would make sure that she is "WHOA" trained then work her on the bird.
This helps a lot when you are by yourself.

Or instead of training in trees you could just drive a t post or piece of pvc into the ground where you are going to plant your birds and then when the dog goes on point loop the checkcord around the t post or pvc. Heck even a piece of rebarb shoved into the ground would work and would be lightweight enough you could just carry it with you and when the dog goes on point shove it into the ground and loop the checkcord around it.

If the dog is Whoa trained and dog moves after command, set her back.

As soon as the dog moves pop the bird. If she is a lover of the chase then keep a cc on her.

i did the majority of my training solo. one thing i can say is remote launchers remote launchers and remote launchers. as for gun breaking, you should try to get someone to help you with that, depending on your method.
