tough situation

Post by bean1031 » Sun Jul 05, 2009 5:57 pm

I own a Maltese that's 12 years old she was diagnosed with CHF a year ago. She has a catarack in each eye. Lost most of her hearing. Pees in the house non stop, throws up everything she eats. Skinny as a rail. My sister is extremely atached to the dog. It's come to the dogs time tho... Should we let the dog die naturaly? Put it down? Her activity levelis nothing. It will be an ugly situation if my sister wakes up with a dead dog in her bed... I guess we could put her down and say a falcon snatched her haha jk jk... But seriously what should we do? If we do put her down I want ideas on how to give her a good last day.... Her favorite thing to do is sleep

Sounds like putting her down, would be in the dog's best interest.

I recently read somewhere, maybe on GDF, about someone having the vet come to their house to do the deed. While it might cost a little extra (maybe a lot in some metro locations), I thought that was the nicest gift a dog could get.....passing in the comfort of their home surrounded by their family. And I know I'm a schmuck, but I've always buried my canine friends with their favorite toy and said some kind words...with tears streaming down my face.

Good luck with this hard decision.

I recently had the vet come to my house to put downn my 10yr old gsp with lymphoma, it wasmwell worth the 35.00 dollars more. i lived pretty close to the vet though. I went to walmart to the craft section and bought one of the plaster of paris kit for baby footprint or handprints and got his foot print and wrote a few words it is a nice momento

Doing the right thing is sometimes the hardest thing to do, but it sounds like it is time for the dog to go, especially if it is in pain.

I had to make that decision just a couple months ago. He was just going down so fast. Now when I think of my friend it is all good!

My belief is that if you have to ask this particular question you already know the answer. It's the final and greatest act of kindness that we can give to our canine pals as difficult as it may be. JMHO

Man, it must be fate that this thread is here now. Yesterday we got the news that our 11 year old has a massive tumor on her jaw. Most likely malignant but will find out more soon. However, we had this discussion with the family and have decided not to take any extreme measures, manage pain, and when she lets us know its time... to put her down (right now she is not showing any symptoms). I really hate this part. I think having the vet come to the house is a good idea and it sounds like it is time.

Ask yourself if the dog has an acceptable quality of life and is happy.

And keep in mind that there is no ‘right’ time. Any time you have to make that decision, you’re going to end up feeling that you either acted too early, or waited too long. Did you wait too long and cause the dog needless suffering? Or act too early when he still had some good days left in him, however few there might have been?
You’re never going to take that one last trip to the vet’s with the utter conviction that what you’re doing is BOTH the best thing for your dog AND is being done at the exact perfect time. There is no exact perfect time to say goodbye. The situation sucks and that’s all there is to it.

Good luck with your decision.

At this time the dog seems like its lost all its ability's to be happy I'm sure he or she is just as miserable and embarrassed. I believe that dogs know these things. The best thing would be to get everyone together let her have a great last meal (people food) and do what is best for the dog.
