Training Jackson - photo essay

Postby CZShooter » Mon Feb 23, 2009 2:56 pm

Well I haven't posted in quite awhile but I went out this weekend to help a friend train his 12-week old Llewellin pup, Jackson. A grand time was had by all.

We began by using some manual bird releasers and allowed Jackson to trail his checkcord while working into the wind.
Birds were set relatively close to one another (20-30 yards apart) but the releasers were concealed under switch grass.

Jackson seemed to know from the gitgo that he was there for a reason and soon enough, he got wind of a bird.

Image

Once the bird flushed, Jackson stood like a champ and watched it fly away.

Image

We relocated the bird and I was able to capture some of Jackson's intensity. Pretty impressive for 12 weeks.

Image

Later on, Jackson relocated a walking bird and showed unusual restraint for one so young.

Image

When it was clear Jackson was more interested in the birds than what we were up to, a friend fired a small cap pistol when one of the birds flushed and Jackson's owner, Joel Pope, threw out a dead bird to see what the pup would do with it. As you can see, Jackson figured it out.

All in all, it was a great day for what has all the makings of a great pup. Way to go Jackson!

Great photo essay. I especially like the way you posted a step by step process that can be picked up and used by members who maybe do not have as much experience as some on here. Great job and nice looking pup. Keep the photos coming. I'd like to see Jackson grow up via your photos.

Jackson is out of Wingswept Llewellins in Jasper, FL. Don't know the breeding beyond that but perhaps his owner, Joel, will get on here and post the details. What I do know is he is a gem of a pup.
