Who is your favorite upland/hunting dog artist?
Who is your favorite upland/hunting dog artist? I personally am looking for a good quality GSP print. I have one by Robert Abbett with a ruffed grouse and a print by Linda Picken "Chance Encounter." Does anyone have any suggestions that would shot a GSP pointing quail or a bird other than pheasants?

I'll second James Meger. I've seen him and his work twice now at local art galleries and he has a tremondous gift. Although he does great drawings of dogs and upland birds, I personally think his best stuff is waterfowl. "Bills, Bulls, & Dekes" might be my favorite "hunting" painting of all time.

Bob Bertram!!! He has my vote. . http://www.bertramgallery.com
Re: Who is your favorite upland/hunting dog artist?
Bertram is really good, but honestly, nobody beats a local artist down our way named Pam Fullford. She drew the portrait of Shooter that's on the header of our website. I've looked through her albums and she has some amazing stuff. Fantastic horse drawings using a ballpoint pen, pictures of GSP's drawn on a feather, and just pages and pages of fantastic dog drawings.
I think she does primarily portraits - not as much of the scenery and stuff like Bertram does, but that is probably more a result of what her clients commission her for. Anyway, if I wanted a commissioned portrait of one of my own dogs, she'd be the one phone call I'd make.

Thanks Brenda:
That is Buster. The posture of the point is actuall a point I have seen him do only a half a dozen times, once during traing and I had a cammera. I had been saving my money and getting together some photos to send Bob to have a painting done. Little did I know that my fiance' (Janet) was conspiring behind my back and had Bob doing a grouse woods scene with Buster in that point. All the while he is painting I am trying to figure out what I wanted, Kept going back and forth about a winter grouse hunt or more traditional. On my Birthday two years ago, I opened that present and thought I got a nice frame, as I am reading the hand writing on the back, It was a note from Bob, Expressing his gratitude for being a part of Janet and I getting back together after 24 years.. DUH!! there was a painting on the other side. That was the most emotion I have had in my whole life.

I like the old 1895 chromolithographs of A. B. Frost and have 7 of the 12 from the "Shooting Pictures" series. Also, Boris Riab and Leon Danchin - Riab did neat studies of various breeds and you can get his 1940-ish colored engravings for about $100 or so (p.s. people think they are signed but they are not - they are signed "in the block" - not individually). Robert Abbett is a great artist and a heck of a nice guy too. I have been corresponding with him for a year and just bought his latest book. I also purchased a signed and numbered print that is the recent quail hunting scene on the cover of POinting Dog Journal. I also have a signed numbered print for a 1982 Ruffed Grouse stamp print. I think Abbet captures dogs so incredibly well. If I could I would commission him but he doesn't paint anymore as he is in his eighties.
Here is some riab engravings: http://www.montaut.com/index.php?page=s ... t&Itemid=1

I love these theads. I have a couple from Zettie Jones. She's out of Stuttgart, AR. I used to live in Stuttgart, AR for awhile. That's where I came to know her art work. I like it.

Being a graphic artist, I get pretty picking when looking at images to make sure their proportions are correct. You know good ones when you see them, yet more stunning are the bad ones...
I like Bob Bertram's work. I also like Lou Pasqua's work. http://www.loupasqua.com/ I saw one of his setter paintings on the cover of PDJ and bought it. I think it is stunning (especially if you are a setter person)...

My vote is for James Meger. He is working on a print of my wirehair right now. He just happened to see my dog and asked if he could do a painting with Gable in it. Pretty cool I thought. I am a little bias though.
