Haha - right on mj!! Nothing too exciting to repair this week!
Been mostly blazing away with my Sony A700:
Those two were with my Lumix LX3 after I about killed myself falling into the snow hustling to the point. Packed the lens full of snow and produced some crazy stuff in the pictures for awhile! Kinda like it but not sure how I did it!!What type of Camera you using these days..

Re: Picture contest...*amended*
I took these today, it's been raining so there isn't to much snow. But it is still a Janurary picture.
We should start a new thread with all the pictures that are being considered, now that it is just about the last week of Jan!! Just an idea.
This once needs some spiffing up, but I thought it had some potential. It may not display centered, but the original one is centered.

I am curious though who will win. I say it would be a great idea to start a new post and have the top 10 for Janurary. After all there is only one more week. Then if you get one by the 31st, just submit it to that post. I guess it is just updating us and so we know which photos to "vote" for???

We have a group of very qualified individuals whose input I will be considering before I make my decision. They know better than I do which photos will fit best in a calendar, which are composed properly, etc. And each month we will have a new member of our "voting" group - whoever wins.
I am also as capitalistic as they come...anyone who wants to buy a vote with monetary donations will be accepted as well .
Thanks,
Rob

Re: Picture contest...*amended*
Well, I decided to take my camera, dog, and a pigeon along today when I went out to fix fence. After taking some sixty photos (was working hard on trying to get a snow-rooster tail running shot), I got to the task of the fence. I had one insulator screwed in when I heard a hawk squawking.....and realized I'd left the bob door locked on the coop. Left the insulators for another day and got back to the coop to discover a hawk sitting in a giant cottonwood 100' from the coop and my pigeon no where in site. I opened the bob door and hopefully I'll find him in the coop before dark. Otherwise, these photos cost me a good homing pigeon. And I meant to change the vibrant red collar out for a nice fitting leather one, but I forgot yet again.
All images are digital and shot Large size on High image quality. Didn't crop 'em this time, but did add a little saturation. Is there a filter I should get to aid with getting warmer tones? Shooting a Canon XTI, and I just noticed I have a sky filter on it--guessing that's my problem. I'll go hit my photography books, but advice is always appreciated. Denise
This one isn't the greatest with her head/eye turned away, but I sure loved the intensity of that hung up foot.
Got a few flying snow photos, but something was always off i.e. wild ears, open bat-teeth looking mouth, or limp tail

Re: Picture contest...*amended*
Good stuff. Unfortunately I have no photography skills whatsoever so I can't help with your filter questions. Almost all of the pictures in this thread are better than the ones I take. Especially in the snow; seems like mine always get blown out. Maybe Tim can chime in as we go along with some helpful advice. It would be a nice, positive externality if we all learned to take a little better pictures of our dogs along the way.
Keep them coming in all! Remember that we are choosing both January and February this month!

Re: Picture contest...*amended*
I can help with this
I actually think the snow shots look pretty good. It is not so much a filter as it is the snow is tricky. Your camera will always see the snow as being actually brighter than what it is in most cases. If you decide to shoot your camera in manual mode then the best thing to do is find a tree or something gray that is in the ambient light and meter of off that. It is the old 18% gray rule. Another old film rule is the sunny 16 rule which was always based on using a 100 speed film at f16 on sunny days and it would generate acceptable images.
Snow is tough and just remember that the camera is going to interpret it to be brighter than what is is. Remember Denise you can always apply the filter in most imaging software. If you have a particular image that you like but are not happy with for some reason email it to me and I will make the adjustments that I think it needs and send it back to you. I will give you the recipe I used. I also would want the high res fullsize image to work on.
I hope this sheds a little light on this for you as it is a dicey subject when shooting in the snow or other bright interferences.

Amazing pictures Denise!!!! She looks like she knows what she is doing...
Here is Jessy today. My camera takes awesome pictures... if you are meaning to. Not the best for just a point and click then be done sorta deal. So they didn't turn out as nice as they would have if I had a tripod or something. I already look like a dork carrying my honkin camera, a tripod to go along with it might be a bit to far.

Re: Picture contest...*amended*
Now that you mention snow messing with the light, that makes complete sense. I was shooting on automatic. I just got the camera in October and haven't shot it enough to really know how to change the settings. Guess if I'd start sometime--I'd actually learn something . I miss the simplicity of my ancient F-1, when I could look at a dial and know what it meant.
Maybe I like saturation too much too. The photos just seem to brighten up a lot with adding a little warmth to them. I do not have a nice photo program at the moment, but am using a pretty basic program that came with my Nikon Coolpix L4. Probably ought to invest in something better. Thanks for the offer of adjusting a photo. I really do appreciate it, but I really want to learn to fix what I can when I'm shooting--if it's possible. I think a lot of reading and practice are in my future.
original........should I have left it alone?

Great shots Lantz. That's a good looking dog with a terrific background. Really like point #1.
Re: Picture contest...*amended*
I see it this way which is actually right in between.
The one version you did is oversaturated as the detail in the dogs head is gone. And a little cleanup on the snow.

Re: Picture contest...*amended*
I have a feeling I oversaturate a lot I'm guessing there's no rule of thumb for that, and you are just using your experienced eye to pick up on the details being lost or enhanced? The snow looks much better without the blue tint, and I think I've read mention of histograms regarding that.....so I'll look into that. Thanks for showing me what could be done to improve the shot. Denise

No problem at all. The histogram will take a little learning curve also. Things can come into play that will effect that also. Look for a mountain in your histogram peaking in the middle. If you see a spike to the right or left it might be a wall or other obstruction. And you are right in assuming it takes a little time to see things in your images. But that will come with time.
Nice looking dog by the way also Denise

Lots of AWESOME Pics! Great looking dogs out doing what they love to do. Doesn't get much better than that!
If I were judging, I'd have to do the "eenie, meenie, miney, mo" thing.

Thank you all for all of your wonderful submissions! The contest for January and February is now closed. We will begin a new contest for March later tonight (when I get the kids to bed and have a chance to post ).
I am truly impressed with all of the submissions and it is going to be very difficult to select from all of the quality pics! If your photo is not chosen as the monthly winner, I may contact you about possibly being included in the calendar anyway. And rest assured, any submissions made thus far will also be eligible for future monthly prizes.
Thanks again and great work.

We got 8" of snow here in South Jersey. We haven't seen this much snow in a long time. I took the dogs out this afternoon, they had a blast!
I messed with a couple to add some cool effects.
If any of you can photo shop out the collars, that would be much appreciated. These are some of the best pics I have gotten of my dogs. The 3rd pic is one of my favs but her tail is down. Think you can photo shop that?!

Re: Picture contest...*amended*
An idea of Photo shopping. I think the collars being phtot shopped are fine, but when you want to start chanigng things on the dog, then there isn't a point doing this, because then there is no way to decide the winner if everything is Photo shopped. Just my personal thought on it.
Re: Picture contest...*amended*
Regarding the tail, I just wanted to see if someone could photo shop it for my personal use. I just love the pic and just wanted to see if someone could fix it for me so I can get it blown up and framed.
I don't want to resubmit the photo shopped tail, just PM it to me if anyone would could do it.
Thanks!

Here is a picture of my buddy's Springer "Guiness". We were out on Saturday and the two dogs would not stop running thru the snow drifts. His Springer has a slightly longer coat and the snow was really sticky due to the temps and we had to keep stopping him every 10 minutes to pull the snow off!! I know it looks like it but we were not having a snowball fight with the dog!!
