That's funny because at least once a week (usually more) someone asks "Is that a little Brittany?" about my English Setter. :D
Guess its the color, although the black nose and tail complete with flagging should be a hint...

looks like not too many EP people have commented here...

Mine ALWAYS gets mistaken for a whippet... that is the first thing anyone asks me about my dog, "is she a whippet? no? well she looks like one."
I haven't seen any that look like Whippets! But I have seen some that look like Pit Bulls!

I usually get "some sort of spaniel". Once when she was a little pup I got "some sore of terrier". I always tell them what she is, but sometimes it does come down to "bird dog". I love it though, when people don't know what she is. I figure that if gsp never becomes so popular that everyone knows what they are then they're at less risk of some day going the way of the poodle.

I've always had deadgrass Chesapeakes, and it's been a rare week when one of our hunters hasn't looked at one's wavy back hair and asked if it didn't "have some Chesapeake in it". Now I tell 'em he's registered as "Coyote In The Woodpile" - which he is.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

I have a Vizsla. Around here there isn't that many and people will alway stop us and ask what kind of dog he is and we always have to explain it's a bird dog. Last night we took him out with the kids trick oe treating and some one asked if he was a weiner dog.

My GSP was solid liver and everyone thought she was a chocolate lab and what happened to her tail.
Thats the one I get the most...

most disturbing was when I went to pick her up at the airport and they asked what kind of dog was I picking up and when I told them a german shorthaired pointer puppy and they told me sorry no we don't have any of them here yet but we have the cutest little chocolate lab..
luckily they then asked my name and figured out I was there to get the cute chocolate lab  ..

The most common one that I'm reading here is my liver GSP even having the all ticked body is a choc. lab, this last weekend I stopped at a game farm south of HAYWARD WHERE i KNOW THE MANAGER AND i LET MY NEW GSP PUP OUT AND YEW HE IS BLACL( SOLID HEAD AND ALL TICKED BODY )and he ran to the manager who was standing with a group of men, I don't know how they can tell who likes them, but he asked what I was calling him and I said that I am going to give him a call name of Riely, and he said that there were a few Rielys there and the member standing there , said that he had never seen the Riely breed before.

Had one guy ask me if my girl was a German Weimaraner Pointer... I guess I gotta give him credit for pronouncing Weimaraner correctly. I get GSP all the time, you would think the beard would indicate otherwise!?! I don't even bother trying to explain the difference between a GWP and a Drahthaar anymore, and I have only had her for 6 months. When I take her up north to OKlahoma and Kansas people recognize her as a "bird dog", close enough. :?

Last night a guy came to our door trying to sell oil changes at the local shop.

He asked if my GSP was a springer spaniel. I told him no he is a GSP.

He said,

"Wow what a good personality for a pointing dog. Nice and clam. Not too common since they have been overbred."

The family and I were out for our Sunday walk about a year ago when we passed a house with an orange and white St Bernard. My 3 year old asked if that was what our dogs would look like when they finished growing. Just had to laugh at that one.

Springer spaniel, dalmation/mystery cross.

Once a couple of kids were admiring my older dog (llewellin, see avatar pic) and they looked up and asked their dad what kind of dog he was. (Too shy to ask me, I guess.) The dad replied with great authority and condescension, "That, children, is a mixed breed!"

I'm with my new GSP out front the other day. My neighbor, who acts and talks big about all of his great bird hunts, comes over to take a look. He says "that's a good lookin brittany". Of course I say it's good looking because it's a shorthair - the look on his face.

When we first got our Brittany, two different people asked if he was a blood hound because of how big his ears were for a puppy. I never thought he would be mistaken for that since most his body is white.

There's a guy at work who showed me a picture of his dog that he got out of a shelter. He told me his vet said it was a shorthair mix - probably some lab or coon hound mixed in there. Ha! If there was anything other than GSP in that dog, I sure didn't see it in the photo - that dog was all shorthair.

I have a white/black ticked gsp that is almost 3 now. When she was about 1 years old I went into town with my mom to this fair and walked her around to get public socialization. In the 2 hrs I was walking around with her I got asked 4 times what my dalmations name was. After the 4th time I felt it was time for me to leave because if I asked one more time I probably would have flipped. I also have her mom which is black. She gets mistaken as a lab all the time too because of her color but the dalmation thing that day was just to out there for me. Some people need to look and think before they talk. Dalmations have long tails and don't have large big black spots like gsp. My dog brooke has a black head with 3 big black spots. One is on her shoulder, the middle of her back and the last one on her butt. Unreal how she was mistaken as a dalmation that day. The black and one color of her must throw people off that much I guess.....

ahhhhhh, we get this all the time with the BEAUTIFUL, BLACK AVA.... My husband and I went to a Game Fair held in Anoka, MN in Aug 2008, very hot that day so we didn't stay long. Lots of retreivers there of course, and when we were leaving I had a guy ask me why my lab didn't have a tail???? I said cuz she is a gsp, and he had the most puzzled look on his face so I went on to explain to him that she doesn't even have the same confirmation as a black lab, or coat, or even head style. His response was and I quote "but she is black like my lab" Oh how I laughed!!!!!! go figure, he must have been a rookie dude... if you want to see a picture of AVA, look on Little Hunter Kennels website and click on photos, find AVA and we are pictured together, with her first title at 1 year old. very cold that day!!!!!I hate the cold.
here's a joke I will leave you with

How many gsp's does take to screw in a litebulb????
Just one, to find it, point it, and wait for their owners to come and screw it in!!!!!

And since I own german shepherd dogs also heres their version of the same joke...
How many gsd's does it take to screw in a lite bulb?????
First, they have to secure the perimiter, get everyone out safely, double back to make sure it's safe to go in and then procede, with caution....LOL enjoy

Actually the "Silver Lab" is a Weim crossed with a Lab. It takes a few generations to get back the silver grey coat. If you look on many of the "Silver Lab" breeders sites some will admit that they are Weim/Lab crosses.

My brother has Silver Labs and he swears that the AKC did DNA results on Silvers and found all dogs tested were purebred Labrador Retrievers, and that the rumor about being bred to Weims to create the silver color has been proved false. All I know is they sure are some pretty dogs.

i don't even bother with the GWP or DD talk....and my shorthair has never been mistaken yet....
But i did make a gentlemens month a couple weeks ago when i correctly identified his griffons...he had told me that they are constantly being called wirehairs and i was the only person he had ever met that identified them correctly, and man they were a good looking pair of griffons.

My GSP is a dalmation. My Vizsla is a redbone or just a "coonhound" most of the time, but sometimes he morphs into a Wymenhymer (thats what they called him!) - though the Weim is just during a full moon. The beagles are "bluetick mixes". And much to my husband's chagrin, his Chessie is a curly labrador - he sure hates that one! Maybe I should stick with the Pointers - I don't usually have any weird guesses with them.

Cripes, I can't even imagine you folks with the more obscure breeds. What about the Braque du Bourbonnais? Never seen one?
Come to Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic - they're a cool looking dog.
