Looking for a good vest

Post by luke0927 » Wed Sep 24, 2008 1:15 pm

I need to get a good vest currently i use a waist pouch and its good for quail and dove but not pheasant and not real practical if you are going to spend all day in the field....I don't mind spending money on something that is good quality and will last...i would like it to be light weight and very practical lots of pockets easy game access etc....if anyone had any recommendations it would be appreciated!

I found this one has anyone use it or one similar?

Luke, I would recommend Bird n Lite hunting vest. Check them out at birdnlite.com I tried them on at a Pheasant Forever event. They put 15 pounds of weights in the bird pouch and 40 pounds of water in the pouch in the back. It was very comfortable. If you order online I have a 20% coupon code # I will give you. If you are interested pm me............Scott

Wingworks all the way for me:

http://www.wingworks.biz/

I don't work for them, nor get anything for promoting them. But I used to live in Hailey, ID and I like the idea of it being made in the USA.

My vest arrived two days after ordering it, and I've already logged upwards of 20 miles with it and love the adjustability.

It's rock solid and I also like it better than my camelbak because it's designed for chukar hunters. I like to freeze the water bottles about halfway full so that it stays cold throughout the hunt.

No complaints yet...

Just my opinion...

Mother's Day Pack or WingWorks. Can't go wrong with either.

I just purchased a Mother Bird Hunting Pack for this fall. It looks well made and appears to be well ahead of some of my old-school vests design-wise.

Check it out on Sierra Trading Post:

I was admiring this the other day - Orvis strap vest. Looks like a big enough pouch for pheasants plus room for plent yother stuff. Comes in blaze or wax cotton. Clicl on the "alt view" picture and you can see how roomy the pouch is. the guy even has a pheasant in it.

I like the Mens Wear House to get my Vest.
I like my filson. Have had it for 12 years buckle broke but my old lanyard works just fine to close it partly over my gut.

Come on, Ruff, that's what duct tape is for!

I am always torn between what to get in orange and what not to. My best hunting coats have no orange, so I have a big orange vest to wear over them. Light weather I have an orange button-down shirt, so then I can use my filson game belt.

Ditto on the Wingworks; great balance of modern materials and a very simple design without too many bells and whistles to be confusing.

Tuff decision and since the basspro here doesn't have much of a selection...i will have to be ordering online....I like the pella one but i have read in some of the review that you can't put birds in it unless you take it off...does anyone know if that is true for the new model.....the wingworks and mothers are nice too...guess i just need to order one an give it a shot....

I have a Pella strap vest that I have used the last two seasons. I don't have difficulty putting birds in the game bag. I won't tell you it is easy, but it is not difficult, either.

I keep looking for something better but have not found anything.

One complaint is regarding quality of stitching. I've had to make repairs to velcro and/or bungee cord due to faulty stitching. I thought it was just my sample but later found others on store racks (from the Orvis store in NYC). I hope they get that corrected.

GarDog, Duct tape sticks to the hair on my belly.

I also made a mistake. My vest is a boyd. Pretty basic two front pockets on front, Two heavy thick shoulder straps with brass, large bag game pocket. and of course the the fine braided laynard belly strap.

I had a filson and it was taken from my truck years ago.

I have other vest of different types but none as comfortable or easy to use or git on. one has the camel back water system, it is to heavy and can be to hot, one is from my high school days that is nylon and zips, no roomfor my belly, One is one of thos cheap pheasant forever ones just bought for the heck of it.

I've got to quit spending so much time on this board.
Everything is going along perfectly well and now I've convinced myself that my bloody old vest needs replacing and it's going to cost me over $100!
Oh, and my wife says "thanks guys".

Tell your wife it could be worse; we could be talking the latest and greatest "new wives" instead of "new vests" !!
