South TX is a big place, but generally expect sharp rocks, sharp thorns, bugs (fleas and ticks) and rattlesnakes. Warm days (80s) and cold nights (40-50s). DUST, DUST, DUST.

Please clarify which part of South Texas. If you are out more to the west you especially need to watch for dehydration - it's a desert. And yep, catctus thorns and rattlesnakes would be my top concerns. Be sure you have a good pair of chaps.

You have enough dogs to hunt a couple of half days, probably no more. Everything in Texas has a spine, a thorn, a sharp edge or it bites! This country is extremely hard on dogs. If your dogs are tough and hunt hard but aren't used to the country and in shape for it (particularly feet) they won't last very long. Expect to have to pull literally hundreds of cactus spines from each of them after each of the first few hunts. After that they'll learn to start moving over and around the cactus instead of straight through it.

South Texas is literally infested with rattlesnakes. If you don't have your dogs vaccinated with the Red Rock Biologics rattlesnake vaccine already you really need to get it done.

In short it's extremely inhospitable country for predators which of course has a lot to do with why the quail numbers can be pheneomenal on good years. CR

Gotta love it though! Home sweet home!
Cactus tines and snakes are the two main things. what is taking you to TX?

Well, I used to hunt in the south near larado, and I would suggest you get some boots for those hounds and if you can aford um snake boots for yourself, and be prepared for pulling out cactus thorns, it is a tough place to hunt....boots should protect the feet but I would bring some forceps for pulling catcus needles and such, and perhaps some rimidyal or other pain reliever for.

Oh yea, don't for get some suture in the first aid pack along with some Lidocaine in case you need to sew up a bad cut out there. There's alot of barbwire fences(along with other stuff) and sometimes dogs don't realize the harm they can cause.
