Looking for photos to use for sporting dog artwork
Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask if anyone would be willing to let me use a good quality hunting photo of their dog to create more breed artwork posters? I have created one with one of our Weims already (see below) and am looking to do a series with Labs (all colors if possible), Pointers, GSPs, etc. The style will be similar, with different colors & backgrounds. I can't offer money but in exchange will put your dog's name & photo credit in the artwork and can send you limited copies of the final piece (I can print on canvas and other nice materials suitable for fine art reproduction). And if you wanted to use the artwork for your own personal use (like club t-shirts or website) that would be part of the agreement.
What I'm hoping to do once I have the series completed is either try to market the artwork to a sporting goods chain, like Cabela's, or simply create a Cafe Press store if there is no interest. Regardless, I want any sales money to go towards breed rescue efforts. The rescue of choice can be decided by the donor of the photo.
The poster of my Weim, Willy, was created for the Weim Rescue of the South's annual auction. They sold it for $350 and the money went directly to the rescue fund. As I can't take in any more dogs, I try to do what I can to help!
Here is the poster:
If anyone is interested, please contact me at stacy@greyghostnh.com
Thanks!

I don't know what the modeling rules might be for dogs, I am not sure there are any. I had a guy photograph one of my dogs for a Gun Dog Cover, he promised atribution. The cover never happened, but found out he was selling the prints. Never even got a thank you.
What I am saying is I am pretty sure you can "steal" most any non-copy righted photographic image you can find to then paint. I know original art is protected from reproduction. I think it nice you are asking and I cannot believe anyone would object, and I have no law degree, so maybe I could have taken legal action. But really what do I care,
Neil

As I manipulate the actual photo, it would be easy to prove that I used someone else's, as the coloring & angles would be exactly the same. So I didn't want to take any chances...
**Thank you** for the great response from everyone!! I'll be looking at all of the photos & getting back to everyone soon. They are all great shots... and you all have *gorgeous* dogs!!
Re: Looking for photos to use for sporting dog artwork
Actually Neil is right. While I doubt anyone here would cause you a problem, it could happen. And on the other hand, for all we know you might be a stock photo co. looking for free photo's to sell. I think if anyone here donated a photo only to find it on a coffee cup at cabela's, they might be pretty upset. And if they own the origional file/negative, and can prove it, it's called copyright infringement. Some kind of agreement for use, really simple one, would protect both the owner of the photo and you. I say this only because it was already brought up. Re-read Neil's post about what happened to him.
Neil,
If you can find the guy and prove the dog in the photo is your's, he has to reimburse you for commerical use. That's why photographer's need to have a modeling release. had some sort of written agreement been in place, he and you would have been better protected. Sad that that is brought up here but you are proof that these things do happen to well intentioned people.

I've got a few of my Chessie. Do you have a preference on the pose?

Years ago when I first started writing, no magazines would publish a photo without modeling releases, now they don't even ask.
I think it does hinge on copyrights, to prove you own an image, you have to have had it specifically copyrighted. I think the laws must have changed in the 80's. If it still were in place how could you have all those photos of Lindsey, Britiney, Brad, etc. in less than complimentary poses.
Skeenan,
Good luck on the project,
Neil

OK, so it's not an actual hunting pic, rather a pic of future hunters, couldn't resist posting this one though.(they're hunting, really, just in their dreams - the center pup is my avatar dog)

These photos are so AWESOME!!! I can't believe the great response, thank you to all of you!! I know some of you have e-mailed me too, so thank you!!
I don't want to keep everyone hanging, so I will look through everyone's great photo submissions and decide this weekend, and be in touch-- I'll need info for the photo credits, etc.
Gorgeous dogs, all of them!
